CPU/Mobo Help! System Not starting..

Yesterday nite, i went about in setuping up my old system in the new cabinet along with the new Antec SP-500 SMPS.

System Specs:

AthlonXp 2600+
MSI K7N2-L (Nforce2 Ultra)
Problem:
After setuping up the whole system, on pressing the power switch on the cabinet the cpu fan starts up and then the system shuts down immediately.

Further, pressing the start switch wont start it up again. I have to then shut down my UPS and then try again to see the system fire up again and shut down.

Problem Elimination

Now, i went about an elimination process and used my old SMPS and found the same problem. Hence it aint the SMPS problem.

Now, what i am infering here is that the problem lies with the motherboard or the CPU. Now the fan i have on the CPU is the Thermaltake Extreme Volcano 12. This is powered by a molex connector and is set up in manual adjustment setup. (That means i can change the fan speeds fom 2500rpm to 5500rpm)

Check here for more info on the cooler..

And yes, i have connector the CPU fan signal from the cooler to the motherboard.

Now, since i cant power up the motherboard again(2nd time) on pressing the power switch on the case, this means the motherboards thermal protection unit is kicking in here , right? (A loose contact between the CPU and the heatsink problem)

Or could the problem be with a damaged CPU? (Coz that heatsink on the cooler is pretty heavy and i was moving it around while setting it up in the new cabinet)
Any inferences would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I dont think youve damaged you CPU.

Attach the CPU Fan to the Socket on the Motherboard. See if you get the error then.

Try reseating the HS. Reset the Jumper on your Mobo too.

I have already attached the CPU fan to the socket on the motherboard.

I think i set the fan rpm @ 2500 or so. Maybe could it be a too low rpm for the motherboard..

Nway, thanks. Will go recheck the heatsink and see if its properly in contact with the CPU tonite.

Btw, by reseting the jumper on the mobo, do you mean to say to clear the CMOS? Nway, will try that too..

Thanks a lot.

Have tried all the above options including reseating the HS and resetting the BIOS.. Still facing the same problem. :(

Check if there is anything shorting the MoBo from below - like a metal stud. Once I had a similar problem and it was caused by a metal stud fixed in the wrong place below the MOBo which was causing a short circuit and another time I had such a problem it was because the cases reset button was defective and was permanently in the depressed position :(

Take the MoBo out of the case and start it and see if that makes any difference.

Good idea, Eazy!! Its a new case here. Will check out both possibilities!! :)

See if the power to the mobo is connected properly. Also check if the 12v ATX connector is connected.

Problem solved!!!

Like Eazy mentioned it was a short circuit or so for the motherboard. When i took the motherboard out of the casing and set it up, it was working. Careful installation of the motherboard inside the casing saw me through then!!

Thanks a lot to all the guys who came up with possible solutions..:)

And a big thanks to Eazy for coming up with a correct solution! Have repped your post!!
Thanks a lot, mate..Saved me a possible upgrade!:hap2:
