Graphic Cards Help to decide.

I am going to buy a GFX card tomorrow. So tell me should I buy a 7900GS and overclock it or get myself 7950GT. I don't want ATI so pls don't suggest one. The price difference between 7900gs (256MB) and 7950GT (256MB) is around 4k.
Just suggest me which is better in terms of price to performance ratio and does 7950GT has huge margin of performance over 7900GS. I am in mood to buy any one of these cards but just don't want to shell out 4K extra for say 10% gain in performance. But if the difference is around 30-40% then I'll get myself 7950GT. So please suggest. :huh:
Also I am not interested at getting a Series 8 card at this moment, maybe 1-2 years later. ;)
Thanks.

Hello john..nice seeing you here in TE..:)

The 7950GX2 will any day outperform the 7900gs, but that will not be very evident unless you are playing at very high resolutions with all the eye candy.

On the other hand, if you later invest in an LCD later, then the GX2 might be a lot better option.also, I dont think 7900GS supports vivo and and HDR-AA, but you can check that.

My suggestion would be go for the GX2. At only 4K of difference, it's worth it.

He is not talking about the GX2, but about 7950GT. If you have plans for a 8k series card in the near future, say in an year then go for the 7900GS. Otherwise get the 7950GT. The difference between the two would be apparent in the forth comming games. Also in that case I recommend that you go for the 512 MB version rather than 256MB one.

Hey tirtho.......man good to find u here. Thanks to u and lord_nemesis for quick reply.
My main question is that will an overclocked 7900gs perform equal to a 7950gt or not? Since I am not going to buy a Series 8 card in near future, is paying 4k extra for 7950gt justified?

if u are getting the card frm the US........then go for the 7950GT as there is a 3000 buxs difference between tht and 7900GS.........

7950 GT. If your not upgrading.

Why not ATi btw?
Personal grudge? Lol.

Id recommend an ATi X1950Pro / X1900XT/XTX over a 7950GT anyday :/.

@Aces170
There are both version with 256MB and 512MB. The price qouted is as follows(all being Leadtek) :
7900GS 256MB -> 12k + vat
7950GT 256MB -> 15.5k + vat
7950GT 512MB -> 19k + vat

@Freefrag
No buddy.....not getting it from the STATES.

@Aditya
Actually I was going for X1950 PRO in first place but could only find Sapphire's model, so due to lack of options here at kolkata........going for nvidia.

ok..i did a bit of searching..u might look into these two here and here

overall, running in stock, the 7950 seems to be a lot better choice. but it becomes a matter of choice when overclocking. the 7950gt seems to be a huge performer when oc'ed too.
also palit uses a 1.2ns memory and 1.4v vcore and oc's lot better than leadtek that uses 1.4ns memory.so it might be a better option if u find it in kolkata.check it here..

hope you have a good buy..:)

Thanks tirtho........I did had a look at those. Palit is not available here in kolkata (confirmed this with the distributors). As 7950gt 512MB is out of my budget so will be buying the 256MB version (Leadtek).
Hoping for a good buying experience......thanks again.

One more thing..........the card has pci-e power connector. O.K. my question is do I have to connect both the molex connector to the PSU or any one of them? Secondly, can I connect it to one supply cable or two different ones?
I have 25A on the 12V rail, is it fine.
I've seen that there is a thread on this topic but it's a little confusing, so if anyone could help.

You will need to connect only one molex. Also ensure that you do not have anything else connected on the same molex line. btw what PSU do you have?

man i dont think u shud put ur 16k gfx card at stake with that psu.. get a quality psu from coolermaster or antec... get the coolermaster 600W which retails for abt 3.6k IMO.. this will suffice for ur future needs as well

With my config. , and a oc'ed 7950GT running at 620/1700 , i managed to touch score's (just less) to that of a X1950XTX , running with a similar config at stock .. and considering the price diff. , the 7950GT is definitely worth it ..

Also , the only diff. i see is in Oblivion and FEAR .. those two are not the only games u know .. On paper's the X1900XT/XTX , X1950XTX sounds a lot better (they're maybe) , but in actual grounds , the diff. i quite avoidable ..

Also , about the PSU .. the 7900GS should run fine on a 350W PSU with 22A across 12V (hell i've a friend running a 6800GT on a 400W psu with 17A across 12V) ... for the 7950GT u'll need a PSU with atleast 380W with 22A across 12V , if u want to maintain a a good stable system ..

I have a colorsit PSU, having 25A on the 12V rail. I know that its not a very reputed brand. Welcome to COLORSit see the last one of the list.

Its better than the regular overrated colorsIT PSU that come bundled with cabinets, but still I wouldnt recommend it for a 7950GT. Had it been a 7600GT, it would have been ok. But for high end cards, I wouldnt trust it.

Its not just about the amperage of the PSU, its also about the quality of output which will have a long term impact on the hardware. To have a stable system in the long run, ensure that the PSU is never loaded to its full capacity.

Thanks u very much people for the support, finally bought the Leadtek 7950gt 256MB. Working fine with my PSU but will soon upgrade to a better one. Thanks again.

I have got these score:

3DMark06 (Default setting) -> 5087
SM 2.0-> 2128
HDR/SM 3.0-> 2058
CPU-> 1756
