Help - Unable to use router to connect to net

Hey guys, as some of you may know I've been trying to share my net connection between two comps. So, I bought a router a few days back. Netgear wgr614v7, however I haven't been able to set it up to run with my net connection yet.
I have a regular cable connection, as in there is no modem, only an ethernet cable from my ISP. I need to log on using an ID everytime I want to access net.
when I try to connect through the router it says "Connecting through WAN miniport(PPPoE).." and after a while I get an error "Error 678 -The remote computer did not respond"

here are the screenshots of the settings of router

I am able to ping the router but not the ISP gateway. neither does the router recieve an IP/gateway address as you can see from the above screenshots..
what might be the issue? I tried contacting my ISP guy, he came home and checked the settings and said everything is fine, and he ran away telling that he will check at his end and never got back to me.

I have been going mad over this for the last couple of weeks, somebody please help me out.. :(

yeah I tried that as well, it still dint receive an IP address and default gateway.. if I set it to no, where do I enter my login id and password?

where have you connected your ISP's ethernet cable ... try connecting it to the WAN port on the modem , and use the modem's dialer :D

your IP PORT MAC address(router) should be same as ur LAN MAC address where u used to connect ur internet cable.......becoz most of ISP uses mac address for identifyin users.....u can override ur mac addr on router with lan mac addr .....i think all the new wifi router has tht facility.

Since you do not have a modem, I am assuming your connection is not adsl. How do you connect to internet normally? Do you require some other application to enter username and password?

Either way you do not have to connect from the PC, the router will connect for you. Try one thing, set the option to yes and enter your username and password. Then switch on your router and wait for a minute, the 'internet' LED should turn green. Make sure that your cable is inserted in the 'internet' slot of the router.

yeah that I understand, but everytime I change comp(hence a different mac address) I would get an error 691, which means I was on the network, only thing is I wasnt getting authenticated. With the router I am not able to dial only right?

about the using LAN mac address as router's, the option is available only when I set the "Does your internet connection require a logon" to no. which is not the case..

@hammerhead - No I dont have an adsl connection, its local cable with only an ethernet wire(directly into the LAN card of the machine).. Yeah I did do that the very first time, I only get an orange blinking internet light.. it doesn't turn green even after a lot of time..

Another thing is, no matter what settings I keep I get the same error 678.. strange heh..

I dont use any specific login software, Its just a normal dialler kind of thing that is configured from some windows wizard kind of thing..

Which ISP service are u using, and what form of login do u use ????
can u upload a screenshot of the login window ?????????

Ur Cable ISP w'd have given u a static IP that u will put on ur PC. Also were given to u the Gateway, & DNS.

Put all of these on the WAN port. Put the ISP's cable into the WAN port.

now make sure prior to this u change the subnet of ur LAN port to something other than ur ISP i.e. the WAN port. Like if ur ISP is on 192.168.0.1 have ur LAN set to 192.168.5.1 or else the router will hang.....

once u do the settings.. plug the internet cable to WAN port, & start the router. then check ping to its LAN port, then check ping to the WAN IP..

Typically u will need to ask ur cable ISP to reset the MAC once for u. Then when u connect from ur router, ur router's mac will get registered to the ISP. There on even if u change ur PC, u will not have to reset the MAC with ISP.

Now ur router will ROUTE u from LAN to WAN. u can login to ur account from any computer in ur LAN.... & u will have internet on all ur comps....

Edit: Didn't realize you have static private IP given by your ISP...in which case it's a MAC issue..just follow what Mehergags said

I am stumped, try asking Netgear for a possible solution.

Edit: Okay try this, connect the cable to any other port in the router (not the internet one) and try connecting with your dialer. It worked with my adsl connection but I could not share the internet with it. I will post if I can get it to share.

just get the MAC ID reset on ur userID & u'll be done.
There is nothing much to do here - I'm 100% sure ur not able to describe ur scenario properly...
If ur in Delhi-- PM me - if feasible I can visit ur place someday.
