One fine day my bro was playing a card game in my home PC, all of sudden what happened is the screen became smaller and then all blank.

Due to my absence a technician came and checked, he did not touched much things inside expect i got the report that the gfx card fan is not working. But the green LED's on motherboard and gfx card are all on.

When I came, the same issue pertained. I removed the card used 2 old SIS S3's in PCI slots, but no luck. Interestingly the motherboard was not giving any beeps but once clearing the cmos i got around 5 beeps.I bought a brand new VGA card "ATI Rage" and put in one of the PCI slot, still no response.

Then I decided to take out everything, I took out the mobo and tested on a table, interestingly this time the processor fan just revolved and stopped upon each start.

I took all these parts individually to a local shop, there first i used the same SMPS, the issue of sudden fan movement and then stopping persisted.

Changed SMPS, the issue went away, but still back to square 1 that is no display. Remember i very well was here using the same old smps but when it was inside my cabinet.

Ram was changed, issue persisted. (no display that is)
CMOS batter changed, issue persisted. (no display)

I put the gfx card in another machine, no luck at all, fan not moving and no display of the gfx card as observed from beginning.

What could possibly went wrong?
Is it possible i need a new PCI-E card to test the motherboard? and any VGA card on PCI card wont work?

I have given the SMPS to get tested in a new rig, awaiting result.

My config,

Asus a8n32-sli dlx
Opteron 146
512*2 twinmos ram
xfx 6800 Ultra
250 gig Seagate HDD
Antec new HE 500 watts
ups APC BR800IN.

Please help me out in what could possibly be wrong, shall I send the motherboard and all other for RMA?

It seems so far, RAM/HDD is ok.
proccy possibly ok. GFX card gone dont know about motherboard and SMPS but seems possibly gone as well?

looks like a motherboard issue ( if you're sure its not the RAM)

same issues plaguing a lot of nforce mobos

Some really old PCI cards do not work on the newer boards. And yes that includes A8N generation. My good old Trident PCI never worked on any first generation K8 motherboards.

These legacy cards are not compatible with many boards. If you know some dealer, tell him to lend you a decent pci card like 5200 PCI or some cheap PCI express card like 6200 for testing. If that does not work, its mostly motherboard and time to change the setup and finding S939 board is very difficult.

Imho mobo and/or gfx card and/or psu- err... what is left. :ashamed:

Please try out that rig with a (borrowed from a friend if possible) PCIe gfx card that has some warranty and a good psu that definitely works. :)
So that in case the mobo takes that out, you can get it rmaed.

5 beeps once- you mean one long followed by 4 rapid short ones?

Follow the CMOS reset instructions for DFI mobos.
Use only 1 stick of RAM in primary slot.
Switch off power from wall socket > unplug connector to psu> depress cabinet power switch few times to discharge psu> remove mobo battery and leave out for 15-20mins atleast.
Put battery in> power up and try to boot> if you get display, go into BIOS and load optimised defaults> save and exit setup> reboot and enter bios and now make any changes to time date etc.
If no boot>
Try with different sticks and only one at a time and change slots- make sure u follow the psu discharge routine everytime.
If 15 mins not work, leave battery out for 30 mins later, and more- maybe overnight and try again.
DFI mobos have been reported to have revived from similar issues even after 4 hrs, 8 hrs, 24 hrs of leaving battery out.

Past few months, i have seen a lot of 939 mobos give up after 2-3 yrs of use.
Lotsa Asus mobo esp, with some refusing to boot up and BIOS chip or PCIe slot dead in some.

Even if you get some used 939 mobo like say an A8NE, which can be arranged, but i am not sure how long that investment will last.

If your mobo is under warranty, you will get a credit note if it cannot be repaired or a suitable new hi-end AM2 or C2D mobo as a replacement.
Your mobo was an expensive one so good for you.
A8NE users have received anything from M2N sli to M2NE and Sorcerer who has A8N sli premium may receive some AM2/C2D mobo worth 7-8K- fingers crossed for him.

All the best. :)

p.s. let me speak to few friends and see if anyone can send you some stuff over for testing and/or standby use till you settle the rma- you may have to pay for shipping though. :)

Switch, how to flash the mobo bios when i cant even see anything in the display...Interesting thing is that the motherboared beeps have stopped as well.

I guess as funky said, Well I need a PCI-E gfx card to try with then, as i could only find brand new 8400GS with local dealers out here who are not ready to lend it!...if any Te'ites have a cheap backup PCI-E solution, I'd be glad to buy it or if they are ready to lend, eitherway would do. Before again sending to Rashi i would really like to try a PCI-E solution in this mobo. Since S939 boards are very hard to find, how would Rashi respond to the RMA of this thing?

Locally, I have found a local VIA KT800 chipset S939 mobo, but at 2.5k IMHO its not worth it....also feels weird to replace a 15k mobo with a 2k mobo...I'm leaving home soon again so gotta do something with this pc and make it up and running!

SMPS status would be known tomorrow, the pc just suddenly went dead without any previous indications that too while playing cards!

Left the mobo for over a night without the cmos battery and tried with a brand new Enter ATI Rage VGA card, no luck. I guess I need a PCI-E solution and try these things over again.
