[HELP] Windows 7: Blue Screen of Death

^ what are you saying? if there was no hdd fault, there is no question of windows 7 pulling down his hdd speeds.

@op, use windows update and not manufacturer site. windows will get the best suitable driver for your system.

When did i say there is no HDD faults read again..

but HDD itself out of that box might be fine.... Rather some other thing is causing faults to be reported to windows...

You belive it or not but I might happen because of "extra excessive" fragmentation also

@op,
out of curiosity have you tried sfc/scannow in safemode with command prompt?

if it is a system file issue; system file checker should take care of that.

The PC gives the BSOD even when I'm in Safe Mode. No scan or check is able to complete.

I tried to install Windows 7 x64 from my original DVD, the computer refused to boot from that.

So, I transferred the setup to a USB Pen drive and tried to install via that.

On the 1st try, the setup files were loaded and after that, I got this BSOD -

I restarted and tried to boot from the USB again. On the 2nd and 3rd try, the files loaded, the 4-coloured logo appeared but after that I get a blank, black screen. Not the welcome message or anything related to the setup. What do I do now?

Please help someone!

Because this thread has become so long, a new entrant might find it very unwieldy to peruse through all the material and read everything. So, I've updated the main post with everything I've got so far to make it easier. Hope it helps.

My hard disks regularly reach the 52-53 C mark, when the computer's been on for a LONG time. My cores even reach 63-65 C, when I'm playing a game or seeing a HD movie. The Graphics card never crosses 52 C, tho.

Here are the minidump files. Someone suggested that I should check my Update History and see if there is any recent upgrade to my drivers that might be causing the problem. Well, every time I open the "Update History" tab of Windows Update, I get a BSOD. Every time. What do I do?

UPDATE - Now, my PC gives me the BSOd as soon as I start it up. The desktop loads. I cannot even open the Start Menu before the BSOd comes up. Happened for the 3rd time in as many startups. What do I do now?

Also, how could RAM be at fault here? Can someone elaborate? I got the same suggestion from somewhere else too.
First of all "Irql_Not_Less_or_Equal" means it is Mostly a RAM fault.

Can you post the Config so that the Ideal temps can derived from it. I am asking you to do this because every system is different for eg: a Pentium 4 generally runs at 50-60 degrees celcius. so it is pretty normal for that system.

as for HDD invest in for a Cooler or else you WILL lose your data. 50-60 C is too high for a Hard disk.

My Hitachi 1TB runs at 35C at normal & at max reaches 40C with full load. It is equipped with a HDD cooler.

CPU - AMD Athlon X2 4800+

MoBo - ASUS M2N MX-SE

RAM - 2GB DDR2 (1 chipset)

Graphics Card - nVidia 9800GT+ 512MB DDR3

SMPS - Zebronics Bijli 350W

Will that be sufficient?

Hi,

From what i can tell it does now sound as a RAM issue. Your config mentioned a single DIM of 2gb, i would suggest, that if u can borrow 2 DIM'S of 1gb each from a friend or ur hardware vendor just to check, it might help us understand it further. Secondly, your hdd temprature from what i see is quite abnormally high. Ambient temp should be about 35 to 38*c. The config also mentions grfx card, i would suggest that u disable it and try installing win7 or starting the pc using the onboard card,

please revert back once u do all this.

@op, if the above posters method fails try this below method.

@op if you cannot boot from dvd, copy dvd to your hdd and start installation from there or use another dvd. try installation using the other memory slot of the board. also if you're installing using the 9800 graphics card, disable the onboard nvidia gpu and then install. that onboard gpu might be causing trouble.

here are few things you can do ...

Use other ram stick and check if you are getting this error. If not then replace your ram.

Backup your data and format the entire HDD and install the fresh copy of windows 7 with latest drivers.

Connect all your h/w parts correctly.

Try to update your bios too to the latest.

It is most probably a RAM issue. Try to boot with one DIMM stick. Or a stick from a friend which you are sure is working. ONLY, install the OS and check for stability. If you reach the desktop, try to use it for a few hours. Do not install anything else. Not even any drivers. Post back.

Hi. Over the last 2 days, I've tried this...

1. Using Seagate's DOS Tool, I ran a Long Test on my Primary ATA HDD (the one with Windows) and a Short Test on my Secondary SATA HDD. No errors. Fully passed.

2. Took out my RAM, cleaned it and put it back in.

3. Tried installing Windows. x64 and x86. Via USB and via DVD. Didn't work a single time. I always get a blank, black screen after the Windows logo appears (when trying with USB). When trying with DVD, the computer doesn't recognize it as bootable and doesn't reboot with it. This same DVD does work on the Laptop.

Also, I saw a new error sometime in all this fracas. I couldn't snap a picture as it passed by too quickly, but it said something like "Device (or maybe driver, don't remember) overrun by stack buffer". Does that help?

Now, what do I do?

Over the last few days, I have tried these things...

1. Removing my optical drive and just trying with the HDDs. Didn't work.

2. Removing my GFX card and trying without it. Didn't work.

3. Removing 1 of my 2 HDDs and trying with just 1. Didn't work.

4. Trying with just 1 RAM stick. Didn't work.

Finally, I decided to try and see if the PC worked with Ubuntu. First of all, the bootable CD didn't work. I don't know how or why. I have tried with an original Windows 7 x86, x64, Ubuntu and even Seagate's Drive Tools for DOS (which worked just a couple of days ago), but my optical drive refuses to boot from any kind of CD. So, finally, I tried Ubuntu via USB Pendrive and it worked. Perfectly.

I left the computer on for long periods of time, and it still worked. I transferred all the data I needed from my 160GB ATA drive (the one with my Windows installation) and tried to format the drive. Ubuntu's drive utility didn't work, giving messages like the "Drive was still in use" etc. But, somehow, using GParted, I managed to format the drive.

But, now what? As I said, my optical drive doesn't boot via anything, so trying anything like Windows XP is out. When I try installing Windows 7 via USB, it never gets past the windows Logo (for some inexplicable reason, just a blank black screen comes up)... so I don't know which options to try now.

I am thinking of getting a new motherboard. My present MoBo is more than 4 years old, severely obsolete (with just 2 RAM and PCI slots each). Will that help, in any way?

Have you actually TRIED installing win xp?

Have you already formatted and THEN tried to install win 7?

Do this:-

1) Format 160gb, remove 500gb, then try installing win 7..

2) format 160gb remove 500gb, then try installing vista or win XP..

Try these two things..

Also, after i went, did u upgrade the ubuntu graphics? I mean update to restricted nvidia drivers from nvidia? Did it work well?

Ok, I put my cabinet in for testing. The technician people said that there is no fault with the RAM or SMPS (I specially told them to check the SMPS) but they pointed that my Motherboard was the culprit. Told me I have to get a replacement. So, now... gotta surely get a new one.

Any suggestions for a bare-bones MoBo? I already have a graphics card and sound card, so don't need any MoBo with them onboard. Just one with good slots and ports, and which will do the job.
