Hi.

I'll be getting a dell studio 15 for "repairs". Before that, i'm supposed to back up whatever is there in the laptop. The easiest way is to connect my pc with the laptop via my bsnl router. How do I do this? Please assist.

Connect the laptop and desktop through LAN cable. Configure the IP address manually.(Ex. IP 192.168.1.100 for desktop & 192.168.1.101 for laptop )
Share the folders and transfer file to desktop.

Er.. I could use more detailing. How? Do I need to use the router? Or should I just connect one end of the lan cable to the laptop and the other end to the pc. How do I configure the IP manually and share the folders?

1. Connect both the laptop and PC to the router, using standard ethernet cables.

2. Assume one system as the host and access the contents of the other system through it.

This requires you to create a 'workgroup' and have the other PC added (listed under) to it. Alternatively, you could click on 'view workgroup computes' to see if the other computer is listed.

(The above options are available in "My Network Places")

3. Once you see the other PC listed in the workgroup, just drag and drop the files into the location.

P.S: The direct connection between two PCs, via the LAN card/port, requires the use of a Crossover cable.
