first off, it showed a DVD +R with data written on it as a CD :S

and even an empty media +R as a CD
it worked fine at my friends place, the same brand empty media i mean, didnt try the written DVD though

so flashed the firmware to 1.21 but it still shows the samething..

someone please halp!

^Rave, sorry I wasn't on MSN too much..
Which burning software are you using? Try Nero, Windows' built in burning software will NOT work with blank DVDs.

ok, was able to urn a DVD, but after burning, the dvd is just dosent recognised, when i double click the dvd drive, i get a blank page, duhh....

this intex sux, and a good quality media is 15 kms away.... :O

any troubleshooting for the same? to read what i just wrote in that dvd lol...

yea i know but as i said a good media is literally miles away, hehe

but this writer is also POS, or am i wrong....

ok burned 3 moser Baer and 2 of these died, and got these cheap media and this one died as well, and all had the same error AFAIR

any help?? am out of hdd space :(

Try a different/new IDE cable - best would be a try a 80 pin cable and see if the error goes.

Edit : Update your firmware. Also, try burning at lower speeds - see if it burns.

One more reason can be insufficent power/poor psu.

Rave check this - so try updating f/w

DVD burners optimize their ability to write to different brands of DVDs by internal "write strategies" that control the laser power and pulse settings to maximize its accuracy with each different dye formula, reflector density and plastic doping chemistry for each brand of blank DVD disc.

When a disc is inserted, the drive reads the factory media ID off the disc and queries its internal list of known disc brands and write strategies. If the disc is listed, then it uses the write strategy for that disc.

If a write strategy for a particular disc brand is not present in the drive's firmware, it tries to estimate how best to write to the disc by writing to the small re-writable "power calibration" area on each unknown disc type to see which power setting might produce best results for the unknown disc brand.

In some cases, the firmware is unable to produce reliable burning with a particular disc brand, and rejects the disc as having a "power calibration error" or "illegal disc" or a similar error. This error is generally not related to disc quality issues, but is simply a result of the drive not having the latest firmware in it that lists the particular disc brand.

From time to time, drive makers test additional brands of DVD discs and then update their firmware with new write strategies for those newly tested discs, enabling their drives to work with more brands of DVD discs.

This is from pioneers site

What is Power Calibration error.

A power calibration error is caused by the inability of a DVD-RW drive to use a DVD-R or DVD-RW disk.

DVD-R and DVD-RW disks themselves have information written on them, within this Media ID code there is information that the drive uses to calibrate itself to the disk, when a drive first starts to write to a disk it will burn a small amount of data to a calibration area on the disc, using the calibration information in the Media ID code, and then try to read back the data that it has written. If it cannot be read, then disk will be ejected and fail with a power calibration error.

A power calibration error is normally caused by problems with the media. Should you be experiencing problems with your drive or the media, we recommend that a disk from a good quality manufacturer be used to test it.

For fault finding purposes we recommend the use of a disk of a known high quality, we recommend disks from:

Pioneer Video Corporation

TDK Corporation

Hitachi Maxell

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation (Verbatim)

Taiyo-Yuden Co. LTD

Matsushita Electric

Industrial Co.,LTD (Panasonic)

Sony Corporation

well will try a different cable when i reboot, but its a problem since all the extra cablers are hidden, hehe, and am using an 80 pin connector only and updated to the latest official firmware as well

does buring the media at more that its proposed speed give this error as well, though this thing has 8x written on it, i think its more or less 4x or 6x type of media, well how? coz i just turned it around and read the fine print on the disk, some code name and 4x written on it lol... so maybe this is causing the problem? or perhaps now lol coz even the MB media crapped out

ok things to try out

Diff IDE cable

and how to enable dma?

and i some how feel i am getting this problem after i updated my firmware, how do i flash back to an older firmware? or this may not be the case?? :S

^ about DMA(assuming XP) - go to device manager/ide controllers/parallel ata controllers/secondary channel - look for dvdrw and check if its ultra dma 2 or multi word dma 2 - if it is, its fine.

about f/w - i dont think updating f/w can cause the problem.

Also if the writer was working fine before and only stopped working now then, clean the cd/dvd lense and try.

OR finally - can be a hardware failure, get it serviced.

Intex media is the worst - it made grinding noises in the half way of burning. I had to switch the power off from the electric socket, and throw the media out.
Anything by intex sucks.
