Hi all,

trying to set up a Solaris 9 box - dont ask me why - its a long story. So i can't find an NIC which is supported - found 3 Realtek ones out which found drivers for one but NIC was fried! - since the supported class_code and vendor code combination is not identifiable. I tried the HCL but it talks about linksys, D-link etc... can some one tell me a cheap card? i need to buy so that it works cool with Solaris 9. I'm looking for a cheap one... probably realtek / Intel if it works properly.

even Small amount of guidance would be highly appreciated.

(No Solaris 10 cos my "server" doesnt have 512Mb RAM :bleh: )

Thanks in Advance
Praveen

1. Solaris 10 requires a minimum of 256MB of system memory.

2. It is still better to upgrade your hardware to run a better system, than having to fiddle with old releases and finding compatible components.

3. You didn't mention if it's a gigabit NIC you need, or a regular 100 Mbit/s one. Anyway, even cheap D-Link ones come with RealTek RTL8139 controllers that are supported by Solaris 9/10.

I recommend Solaris 10u3 for your server, not only because it supports more hardware, but it is much more secure out of the box. Not to mention new features like ZFS, DTrace et al.

thanks yamaraj - but the truth is my "server" is an old pentium box with 128 Mb - its better to seach for drivers than to search for SD RAM :D

I have Solaris 10 ready with me but did not want to run it requires 256 as minimum (as you have pointed out) and 512 for PE boot in x86.

Solaris 9 requires 64 minimum. So chose that.

my mistake 100 Mbit/s is the one i want. Eventhough there are different company NICs with realtek 8139 out there - they seem to have different vendor id - even if class id is the same.

so Solaris 9 is NOT identifying those - so i have a list of class and vendor ids

"pci1186,1301"

"pci10ec,8139"

"pci1113,1211"

if it doesnt match that its useless buying one..

help again.. if you can point out an NIC which someone is currently using for Solaris 9 or 8 etc.

Thats really cool - Thanks a ton... let me go out there and search for DLink DFE-530TX and 538TX cards.

"pci10ec,8139" is also used by Compex NICs - don't know if you have heard of them. anyways i'll keep searching... also trying to get an Intel 10/100 PRO - its unofficially supported i guess...
