hi i am experiencing converting mpeg1 and vob vidz to divx and xvid. i have the latest codecs(k lite latest) ...and divx latest instaled.i use a-one video converter and xilisoft avi mpeg onnverter to convert between files.the problem is that while the songs files rip very well, movies sometimes fail(in xilisoft) and give sync(very large) errors in both the softwares.what softwares should i use..i mainly use np3 or ac3 for audio.help!

IMHO Virtual Dub Mod + Nandub is the best thing out there ..coz i havnt faced any synching issues (if there were.. i simply got them aligned back :) )
try guides @ doom9.org (same as doom9.net)

Avoid codec packs IMO. Us autoGK for converting vob to divX/Xvid. Simplest program I've used; and it does the job well. If you want more control, use virtualDub.

What u seek here depends on ur learning & experience level. Video encoding needs descent amount of pre-learning so that u know what actually frames are, how a framserver application works, how quantization metrices afffect, how MUX/DEmux functions are available & are to be used, whats color correction, chroma filtering etc etc etc.

Yes, there are a 100 things small & large that can affect ur filesize, ur Video
Quality & encoding times.

If ur seriously thinking of learning it, I recommend starting with this guide. Very detailed explaination to start with. Use Gordian Knot, u will be far more flexible at the options but it needs patience & time. else if u just wanna do it for fun & dump, Auto GK is fine.

U may also learn x264 encoding, personally my favourite, using MEGUI but first get familiar with GK.

OK...since video converters are in discussion...any way to convert a selection of video in AutoGK/Super encoder???....like clipping a scene from a movie file....etc..

what kind of source are u talkin abt from clipping ??? DVD-MPEG or already encoded Xvids ? be more precise on what u wanna do so that it can be explained better.

For DVD- Video u can either use Nero Recode, Chopper XP, DVDshrink or tmpgenc to chop out & reauthor the Clips.

for Xvids, nandub does the best. If ur experienced enough & can play with, Virtualdubmod is more elaborate at stream compiling etc.

^what i meant is ... like super encoder..which recodes any file...is there a software which recode only a selected part of a file...{ a universal clipper perhaps? } .. this would be gr8....i use Virtualdub for xvid,mpg..etcbut im having difficulty with DVD formats..:(

Thats what i said for the DVD format... cLip out ur DVD video 'in the DVD format' only. Then encode the clip into the wanted codec..

thanx guyz....so one more time...
1.read the guide first
2.use auto gk(xvid codec comes along with it)
3.totally avoid k lite

is that all?autogk or super?i need n app which is faster(and is somewhat beter performing with dual cores since i have c2d.

i dont understand why to avoid Codec packs...stick to 1 codec pack..
anyways i use the following stuff.

1)K-Lite player
2)KMplayer
3)Real player
4)Real Producer
5)Super Encoder
6)Virtual Dub
Dont have any problems whatsoever...
