Well, some time back ,I burnt abt 11 DVDs in one stretch. Out of them 8 were duds(I had posted this on TE too ). Since then, I have not dared to burn DVDs at anything more than 4X(on MoserBaer 8x DVDs).

Even with that, using Nero Burning Rom 6, the CPU usage is 100% throughout the time the DVD is being burnt. This never used to happen earlier. I could watch vidoes, browse the web, etc.... But now, I cant do anything coz my comp is super slow.

Any ideas?? Will upgrading th firmware of the 1653S to a 1693 or 1673 f/w help??

sometimes DMA gets disabled nikhil.
go to device manager and check the ide controllers.
there, under the primary/secondary channels...check if dma is enabled
i think for optical drivs..its ultra dma 2
and for hdds its ultra dma 5.

I have not changed any settings on my drive. The settings are same as before.

check the pic.. if the "Let BIOS select transfer mode" is checked, uncheck it and restart.

Also try using some diff IDE cables. A lot of times optical devices malfunction due to some prob with IDE cables too.

I had actually been disabling and enabling the DVD Writer coz I was using a virtual drive to mount some images.

Could this have anything to do with it??

I has uninstalled the Virtual Drive now. Will try burning a DVD later today and let you guys know how it goes....

Here is a screenie to show my settings....

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice. I think the problem was me installing a virtual drive which was being recognised as the primary drive.

I uninstalled the primary drive and now, everything works fine. Just took a screenie to show the CPU usage during the burning of a DVD.

Thanks again guys!!! The drive seems to be working fine.

I tried burning at 8x with some other media and it burns fine. No more coasters.
