Storage Solutions Hitachi 160GB SATA 2: Is this NORMAL ?

Hi ...
I have no clue abt this...someone pls help.....

Hitachi Sata-2 160GB drive.

I ran HDTUNE 2.53 on it....Temp shows : 49 degrees.

ScreenShot attached....

Hard drive experts pls help.

The drive runs very very silent....however just want to know if anything is wrong and if yes wat is to be done.....

Thanks in Advance.

I have 4 of these same Hitachi HDDs and the reason I like them is because they run very cool in my computer and in my External USB/eSATA cases :) Maybe there is less air circulation in your case :S

Check the temps with some other program and see if it shows the same high temp.

Touch the top of the HDD - at the temp you are getting the HDD should be quite hot to touch.

@Eazy : Its un-touchy to touch......wat to do ? :(.........

RMA the HDD .... Hitachi take 10 days to replace but they did not ask any questions when I returned a working HDD by mistake - they just replaced it in 10 days..... turned out my SATA cable was bad .... :)

Where did you buy it ?

Got it from my comp guy in Andheri...and its got TODAY.....so i will go and return it tomorrow and say it aint working correctly.....maybe he will oblidge to change it.......how to do i remove all the data from the current one then..? and whats the normal temp u get ? is there anything else to check ?

B4 u RMA it, try having a 80mm fan blowing over the HDD.. makes a ton of a difference. I had 2 Seagate SATA drives wich were giving temps of around 47-48 C. Having a 80mm fan blow over them brought the temp down to 36-37C.

Tell the dude that the HDD is running too hot and make hime run the drive and check it out...

I run "KILLDISK" to clean out HDDs - this does a good thorough job ... free version is available - Google it.

you will not like this... check the temps of my 2 250GB HDDs shown by Mother Board Monitor ... 32C each .... I have the AC running just now - but the afternoon temp I get these days is around 35C for these HDDs and they run about 1 - 2C warmer than the Hitachi 160's.

@Masky ... these Hitachi single platter HDDs run very cool - they run cool even in my external cases - so if this particular HDD is running hot then I would suspect there is some problem with it - I think better to replace it. If the next HDD too runs hot then I would take a closer look at the case.

update : i mounted 2 small fans on top of the hard drive.....the temperature dropped to 40 degrees / i put my room fan on full...it dropped to 38 deg....is it the heat factor ??? wat should i do...am still confused ? maybe its the case...its a elchepo iball cabinet here....maybe its jus the air-circulation.....as i type this its dropped to 37 and its stable there !.......so i guess its just the HEAT and non air ! .........the fans are doing a nice job......

@The Mask : Appreciate ur suggestion , willl run it for tomorrow in this manner and monitor the temperature :) ......also will talk to dealer if ready to replace if the problem is due to something else :)

Its 4 am and now i can sleep in peace :) after completing the gr8 indian hard drive cooling hehehehe :)

also PLEASE advise any other tool i can run to check other funtionality of the drive being well !

@eazy : i got this :D.......80 buks :D hehehehehe....he said if u buy in bulk more discount ! lol....chinese make ofcouse will install and see how it helps :)

These fans really make a difference to HDD temps.... but remember to clean the HDD every month or so - a lot of dust gets thrown on to the HDD - this of course depends on the level of dust in the room. If this cheap Chinese fan dies it will create a heat problem for the HDD so keep an eye on the HDD temp with some monitoring software. For monitoring HDD temps I use Mother Board Monitor in the systray and Samurize on the desktop.

@ eazy : point noted hmmmm...anything can be done to avoid it ? i mean opening n cleaning ? and as u said if it dies its certainly a problem.....however if this "REALLY" works....i know a "FAN" only shop in lamington....will go and pick up exact same size reliable ones get wiring done from him only or a electronic guy in my area :D and use em.....even with the cooler...i will let 1 of 80mm fans to be there above incase these die out...which i doubt they would soon....u know afterall...nowadays everything is chinese ! ...hehehehehe

Here is it....Installed the same and it does the job of those fans which I mounted on top before. To keep the drive kool I had just kept 2-80mm fans on top of the hard drive...both blowing ON the surface of the drive.....
this mount is awsome....simple fit in 2 mins flat....too good....the fans are very very silent indeed.....Temp. stable @ 37 degrees even after gaming on NFSMW. WoW ! Indeed thats 10 degrees less than no cooling !........If anyone wants me to perform any other steps lemme know....

my WD 320 GB Sata HDD used to run at 45-46 Deg, it dropped to 39-40 when i changed my cabinet to Zebronics Antibiotic, it runs at 35-35 deg with my air conditioner on, so try to check the air circulation inside the cabinet
