Hey guys

It seems my hitachi 250GB SATA2 HDD is heating up a lot. Everest shows a temp of 52C :( . The Hdd is not under stress, just some casual torrent download. What could be the prob?

Btw i also have a samsung 80GB P-ATA whose temp is shown as 37C.

I have 2 of these HDDs and they run pretty cool, around 35C. Maybe there is an air flow problem in your case - do you have a fan blowing air over these HDDs ? You could buy a cheap cooler for the HDD, this reduces temps quite a bit. Check price and where it is available from Xterminator in this forum, he has one of these HDD coolers.

^ i dont have any hdd coolers, yet.

i have kept the HDD outside the cabinet to check if the prob exists. but it still runs very hot! i will try and find out about the hdd coolers.

When you have the drive outside the case have a table fan on full speed blow over it and see if it makes a difference. Have you touched the top of the drive when it is running and confirmed that it is really hot ? Could be a wrong reading from the drive or Motherboard :)

To give you an idea, this is what HDD coolers look like, these prices are high compared to the street price. These HDD coolers can drop the temps quite a bit anything like 7 - 10C, but these coolers throw a lot of dirt onto the HDD which then needs to be cleaned every month or so :(

eBay India - hard disk cooler, Computer Components, Laptop Accessories, Fengshui items at low prices

oh, the drives pretty hot on the top and the sides are even hotter.

i will try keeping a fan near the HDD and see if there is any difference. if there is, i will get a HDD cooler. Any particular make/model recommened?

Check with Xterminator the brand he bought, from what I remember it seems to be good and cheap.

Quite high for 250GB. I get around 51-53C on my WD 500GB PATA HDD after moderate to high load. My problem is poor cooling inside cabinet.

But, to be honest, I've never observed heat related issues like data loss etc with any of my 3 WD HDDs. And they get quite hot to the touch when examined esp the Raptors.

I dont think theres anything such as 'heat related data loss as such ' :P All that may happen is that the life of the hdd gets reduced i guess......so ur only intimation will be a crashed drive ;)

Dude I have a 320 GB Hitachi and it runs at 38-39C max considering my room temperature which is pretty warm, It is cooler than WD or Seagate comparatively, Also I now have a new bijli cabinet whose 120mm fan blows directly on it, the temps are very low now the average temperature is 35C and the max temperature is 36C(HIGH LOAD). I use my comp for more than 12hours everyday...

There might be some problem with your Hard Disk Sensor, try to improve your airflow..

Mounted a 120mm fan on the side panel of the cabinet and the results were good.

Good to learn that the hdd temp dropped after installing the 120mm,but how come ur cpu core temps are lower than the actual cpu temp??
