I had a hitachi hard disk which kept on simply stopping. sometimes it would not be detected during boot, or stop in the middle of something. didnt matter what OS - happened both in linux and windows. Finally got fed up and RMA'd it when a partition became corrupted, and ext2 recovery was more than I couldnt handle

Either way, i wrote it off as a one off. loose connectors, bad SATA controller, cable , whatever.

Today a colleague pinged me and described the exact same symptoms, and it was a Hitachi HDD too!

Have any of you been facing this issue?

maybe the colleague got the same HDD that you had rma'd :P ... anyway google didn't throw up any similar problem.

I used to have 4x320gb hdd's at one time, still have 2 of them and so far they are all running fine.

I was facing the same problem some time back ....
Even after gettin it RMA'd the same prob was dere ...
but in the end i found out the prob was not the HDD,
U need 2 change ur SATA and power cable....

I am having the exact same issue with my hitachi 160gb drive.

Already rma'd it once 3 months back. It was a year old then.

The replacement drive has been acting up since the last 4-5 days.

Same issues. I will change the sata cable / power connector tommorow and see if it goes away.

i too have 2006 160gb Hitachi sata n its still working silently smooth...i would really rate it above wd and sgt. :)

BTW as for your prob goes, same thing happens on my current rig. at times my seagate 250pata or seagate 500 sata disk is not initialized by bios but only when i go in bios/Disk config and press enter (manually detect). Changed cables but lol!! no perfect solution. ::P

Rest seagate 2x160gb sata have literally no issues even though if you using any bad cables.

I guess older 160s were really made for rough uses :bleh:

The Hitachi 160gig i had (which i recently sold on TE) works flawlessly for more than 3 years now
no such problems i faced with it

might be a coincidence

Mine is a 250GB SATA drive which I bought along with my new PC back in May '07. It's working perfectly fine and no booting issues coughed up till now. *Touchwood*
