Home network

Hi all
Consider me a n00b at this so please bear with me the stupid questions that I'm gonna ask. :ashamed:
Right now I've a BSNL 1350UL plan and the UT Starcom's UT300R2U DSL modem.
It is connected to my single desktop and works fine. Now the problem starts.
I want to create a home network, both wired and wireless. On it there will be mainly 3 devices:
  1. Desktop, mainly for gaming and folding
  2. Laptop as a download rig
  3. Nokia E51, a WiFi enabled phone
Now first of all please tell me what should I get, a Wireless gateway or a wireless router? If I go for gateway then will the BSNL's would be enough? I mean in that scenario I'll just trade in my Type 1 modem for Type 2 one with difference of 600 bucks only. Will it be good choice?
Secondly, how can I share the same net connection between devices considering the fact that my desktop runs on Vista, laptop will work primarily on Ubuntu and phone's a Symbian 60 ver 3 device ?
Also can the gateway or Router be used independently as a Switch? I need to know this as I'll be setting up an Icecast server based Radio Station as my final year project.

set the modem in pppoe mode (i.e. the modem dials your connection and stays always-on)

Connect the modem to a router (WAN side)

Connect your desktop and wireless devices wired & wirelessly

That's it!

(your router is not going to discriminate between different OSs :P

Get the Bsnl router rs1600, with 4 lans and wifi, use lan for desktop and wifi for laptop and phone, just enter the connection details in the router like you do for the present modem..all will be fine..

OK but how to share the connection amongst 3? Also in my current setup, I've disabled the DHCP from my side, instead the the IP that I've assigned to my system is 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.1 being the default Gateway's IP i.e. Modem's and have manually set DNS server IP, so when I connect other machine to the modem then what should I do about its address, I mean keep it to DHCP(usually get limited or not connectivity under it) or give it IP 192.168.1.3?
I know I get limited connectivity because of the port forwarding issue and I've tried million times to fix the issue but not possible as the NAT and DMZ options are not even present in my router's settings page. :@

You'l have to set it up the same way as you do now..there'l be no difference in the modem except that it'l have wifi..

But i didnt get your question properly..

My question was about addressing and getting other machines on the network. What would be the way, all machines will dial-in like we do or the primary machine only, laptop in this case will dial-in and others will share its connection or what? How to setup the WiFi link? How to secure it using WPA2?
Oh my God, either I'll go crazy or will drive u guys to madness, please help me old rabid fool. :( :S :ashamed:

Are chill..

You dial through the wifi adsl router, its very simple.. just go to 192.168.1.1 go tto wan settings there's be a table, press edit on the first one, and press next next til you get to a point where it asks for username and password, Put them in and and next next save,

and reboot the modem.

This wil stay on dhcp, if it works dont bother if it doesnt, post here..

For the rest, get the wifi working first, wpa and all is simple..just a matter of ticking options and entering passwords..

Bro, what u r telling is setting the modem to PPPoE mode, I was relying on dialing in the connection from the machine itself and setting the mode to Bridged in the modem.
I'm just asking this that if in Bridged mode, then one machine will dial-in, laptop in this case, then how remaining 2 machines will connect, E51, I know will just search for the available WiFi network and will start surfin' no need to connect there but what about the desktop and what if instead of wires I want to connect my laptop directly thru WiFi?
