looks like then BWA is going to suck too :(
Bharti Airtel is likely to buy yet-to-be-launched Indian wireless broadband business of Qualcomm, industry sources said. The US-based chip maker is set to be in an advanced stage of discussions with the country's largest telecom operator to sell its BWA licenses in all four circles, sources told ET NOW.

The valuation of the deal is likely to be around USD 1.2-1.3 billion, with a premium of 25-30%. Qualcomm has BWA licenses in four circles of Mumbai, Delhi, Kerala and Haryana and paid USD 1.05 billion for these permits and airwaves. "Qualcomm is not expecting much of a premium on these licenses. It expects only a commitment from the operator that it will use its LTE TDD technology," an industry source added.

the moment i saw the name airtel i understood its going bad.... if airtel buys those precious lte bands stop imagining mobile broadband revolution, that many is foreseeing in India... if airtel buys that in 1.3 billion usd now adding up the infra ( which is significant) and other costs per gB will add up to min 850 to 900 bucks ( i m being " optimistic" )... they will suck up so much money from people that whu knows what will come....

hurray, the new BORE-band revolution by airtel, get upto 4mbps for 1GB then FUP

Re: hopes for better 4g option for broadband dashed ? Bharti Airtel to buy Qualcomm's

I had high hopes from qualcomm since they were to bring a newer technology to india.
So thought they might want to showcase that technology by making it a success.
But now with airtel buying it they would certainly not want to make it any cheaper than their 3g plans to mar their own 3g business. :(

Re: hopes for better 4g option for broadband dashed ? Bharti Airtel to buy Qualcomm's

If airtel buying through means there is nothing good for customer because they will come up with nice fup based plans which end of the day usefull for low usage customers

^Which is what any business would do...Maximize their profits. If it was a public sector company then i can understand the heartburn, but this is a private player. What do you expect?

Re: hopes for better 4g option for broadband dashed ? Bharti Airtel to buy Qualcomm's

So, once again India's Broadband growth is going to get a MAJOR SETBACK due to Bharti buying Qualcomm's BWA.

First Government was sleeping , now Bharti will force us to sleep with its nonsense tariff.

i think relaince is also private player and not a psu which offer non fup connection and so many other private players

^i agree.
For most corporate entities their only aim has been to show double digit growth every quarter by creating an artificial scarcity for these resources. It is time for the government to lift fup on all plans upto 2 to 5mbps connections . They can lay fup on higher speed plans but those limits have to be realistic. In terms of 500gb or so for 20mbps connections and then 2mbps speed cap.

yeah only hope is on govt to make minimum broadband speed to some good lvl like 1mbps or so

Re: hopes for better 4g option for broadband dashed ? Bharti Airtel to buy Qualcomm's

Mtnl/Bsnl were the only companies who followed the rule strickly when TRAI made 256kbps as minimum level. before the rule, we were happy with 32kbps or mostly the country were on 64kbps , sify etc, after MTNL came with minimum 256kbps speed plans, the whole world shifted to minimum 256kbps, then later on without any rule/or any direction MTNL/BSNL jumped to 2mbps platform and then everyone was forced to jump to 2mbps.

I know that even now, giving speed of 2mbps is not enough with nonsense download limit caps, but I am hopeful that MTNL/BSNL will force every single market participant to increase the speed to 2mbps + and with bigger/pure unlimited plans in near future.

In our country we can only hope for the best. The shift may be delayed, but it can not be stoped, Bharti will be forced to offer consumer oriented plans in future to survive.

Only hope for us Delhi users is MTNL. It's giving us really good plans but we want more and if they will bring changes then only other companies will follow. I am atleast expecting doubling of speeds like last year, fingers crossed. xD

Re: hopes for better 4g option for broadband dashed ? Bharti Airtel to buy Qualcomm's

Yeah, MTNL keeps introducing Rs. 350 192kbps plans

I as a Delhite am very hopeful
