KDDI R&D Laboratories have collaborated with Japan’s National Institute of Information & Communications Technology (NICT), where their partnership resulted in the most advanced fiber optic cable in the world.

Just how advanced, you ask? Well, both parties are proud to announce that this new cable is able to move data at unprecedented speeds of up to 10 times faster compared to what existing cables can. In layman's terms, this means a whopping 30 terabits per second compared to 3 that we're "enjoying" currently. To make the scale even more unbelievable, that is the equivalent of 720 DVDs of two hours each transmitted to the other end within a second. KDDI hopes to commercialize this technology (how else are they going to recover the funds that were sunk into making this technology possible?), and hopes to connect all major Japanese cities with this new cable in the future, racking up a $210 million bill in the process

Maybe when I'm 90+ and on deathbed, I'll be able to videochat in 1080p HD format with my relatives in multi-user conference, using this technology...... maybe!! :P

ummmm streaming 1080P(optimized for internet) doesn't take more than 8Mbps...u can do that using Airtel's 16Mbps plan...(but the plan sucks i know)

There would be time cap on .. You only use the connection for 1ms everyday ..

ROLF...

I just hope that IF IF IF such a technology ever comes to India the world is not using cables transmitting petabytes :bleh:

And at that time we (oh sorry our great great grand children) will have some other type of HD stuff which will have each movie size as some TBs and we will curse these connections for being slow and not being able to download those movies :ohyeah:

 gud one :ohyeah:

this would be useful only for the isp companies i believe. it would help in increasing the bandwidth to them and increasing consumers too.

i dont think end users will even get such speeds. at the max 1tb would be offered if fibre is laid till the home. but that is too much optimistic thinking.
