How can i manually overclock my newly bought XM3 1600MHz CL9 RAMs

Hades.

Forerunner
My Rig Specs:

Processor:Intel Core i5 750
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H55M-D2H
RAM: Corsair XMS3 1600MHz CL9 2x2GB

By default these rams run at 1333mhz speed... i wanna overclock them to their specified speed "1600MHz @ 1.65v"... the thing is that when i select XMP profile in the BIOS these rams run at their specified speed but XMP profile also overclocks the CPU to 2780MHz and it also disables the Turbo function which i dont want... Is there any way to overclock these RAMs to 1600MHz without selecting the XMP profile and my cpu shud run at 1200MHz coz i like to save on electricity bill :P

Thanks In Advance :)

I'm not quite sure whats up with Corsair but you are not the first person I've tried to help on this forum with facing problems with the stick running on 1333Mhz by default :P

Anyways, I'm not sure what the option is on an Intel Gigabyte board but on my AMD Gigabyte board, enter your system BIOS and go in Motherboard Intelligent Tweaker, select Memory Clock to MANUAL and then raise the memory clock to x6.66. It should now be running @ 1600Mhz :)

As for saving electricity bill, what I did with my super-heavy X6 is that I went in the BIOS and lowered my Processor Clock Ratio to the lowest available (5x). My processor now runs at 270*5 = 1350Mhz.

When I need full power for any work/game (which is quite rare as even a 1.3Ghz Hex-Core can run most content smoothly- Team Fortress 2, Opera, Basic Photoshop, Internet Radio), I load up Gigabyte EasyTune6 (which comes with the softwares disc from my motherboard) and raise the multiplier back up to 14x (270*14=3780Mhz). When I'm done with any work/game, I lower it back down to 5x via the same software or just restart my PC.

So u meant to say that i wont b able to manually overclock it to 1600MHz? :(

Overclock it? No dude, its just that the RAM multiplier isn't detecting properly in the BIOS. TRY going in your BIOS and doing what I suggested above.

I can't do what u r suggesting coz theres no such option in my motherboard's BIOS :(... i have tried to do some changes in memory settings like manually changing the latencies to 9-9-9-24-41-2T and the voltage to 1.64v but no success... :(

If u want i wud post a screenshot of my bios... :)

I see. I just went through a couple of reviews of some Gigabyte 1156 boards and they seem to be more structured/complicated.

Anyways have you tried going in ... Motherboard Intelligent Tweaker > Advanced Memory Settings > System Memory Multiplier. That seems to be the Intel alternative to Memory Clock Ratio on AMD boards. Put that multiplier to 6.66 or raise it by one notch.

Don't forget to put your memory timings back to AUTO, but leave the voltage and 1.65v and hope for the best.

Whenever i try to change the system memory multiplier to 8 it shows 1066Mhz when i select 10 the bios shows 1333MHz... :(... AND BTW 10 is the limit i cant take it to beyond 10... :(

Damn. Okay is your motherboard BIOS up to date?

Download/Install @BIOS from your Gigabyte Website/Gigabyte Software Disc and use it to find and install the latest BIOS for your motherboard.

Yes.. My motherboard Bios is up to date... My Motherboard's BIOS Version is "F3" which is the latest one...

Seems on your board because of the memory multiplier restriction you will have to run the cpu @ 2780mhz like you mentioned before. I suggest you run it with the XMP profile and that should be that. Also I suggest OC,ing the cpu more like around 3.6ghz to get the most of it. At the higher cpu clocks you will need to adjust mem multiplier again to keep it around 1600mhz. Maybe on a more expensive board you would have had higher mem multi options Im not sure on this though.

But you should oc that i5 eitherways just keep an eye on the temps.

Intel i5-700 memory controller only supports dual-channel DDR3-1067 and DDR3-1333, thats the reason its not running at 1600 mhz by default.

AMD's six-core CPU but can also challenge the more expensive Core i7-860 which only differs from the Core i5-760 in its support of Hyper-Threading (which is not always a useful technology) and faster system memory (DDR3-1600).

As a result, the Core i5-760 can only support DDR3-1067 and DDR3-1333 unless you increase the base clock rate. The Core i7 series additionally supports DDR3-1600.

Currently they are running at 7-7-7-21 latencies coz i have changed the memory settings otherwise these rams run at 9-9-9-24 latencies....

What Arjun posted makes sense. Follow the last link which he posted and read the article by ekoostik. It explains in a nice way how to get the RAM at higher speeds, but this would cause your CPU to be quite highly OC'ed.

Try those settings, but keep a watch on temperatures.

This is what i dont want... i dont wanna overclock my CPU to run rams at their specified speed :(

^^

Then you cannot.
Yes... after reading eboostik's post i understood that i cannot... i either have to upgrade my CPU to i7 860 to run these rams at 1600MHz or i have to run these RAMs at 1333MHz to keep all the CPU features enabled... Or the last option is to enable XMP which will overclock the CPU and Disable turbo...

BTW thanks guys for helping me... :)

My opinion is that you OC the FSB slightly to reach 1600Mhz RAM speed and then lower the multiplier of your processor to bring the clock speed back to stock speed.

Thats the suggestion I would go with if I am looking to run everything at advertised speeds and not run my electricity bill higher....
