I just assembled a new system:

Raid 0,1,5 Supported by ECS C19-A Mobo w/ Award Phoenix Bios
PENTIUM D840 3.2ghz 800FSB CPU
2gb Corsair TWINX PC5400 DDR2 667mhz Ram
2 x WD Caviar 320gb SATA 3G 7200/16mb HDD's
NVIDIA GEFORCE 6500 265mb Ram PCIE Video

I hit F10 to enter raid setup utility and set it for mirroring and chose the option to boot but when I try to install XP Pro it only recognizes my external 160gb Buslink IEEE 1394 HDD. What did I miss when setting up raid? Is the utility idiot proof for us Raid Newbies?

There are two ways of doing it: the F6 method and the unattended method.

In the F6 method, you have to first create a raid driver diskette using your mobo cd. Then when you are about to install xp and it asks you to press F6 to add storage drivers, press F6 and select the drivers from the diskette. Check your mobo manual or site for more specific instructions.

In the unattanded install method, you have to use an unattended xp install cd with the raid drivers from the mobo cd or a recent driver install file already added. You don't have to press F6 with this method. Use nlite or similar programs for this. Search nliteos.com for speciofic instructions.

I had 2 drives, both wd sata setup to mirror. In my computer I saw only one drive so I assumed thats normal sinc everything work fine. A few days ago I added a 3rd (wd 80g ide that I couldn't boot from anymore (the reason for the new system) so I could get files from it. Today my raid utility window popped up to let me know I had a drive available to add to the array so I did. It gave me the option of mirror or stripe, so since I already had 2 mirroring I added it as a stripe (i'm thinking that might have been the wrong choice. When I rebooted tonight I got a message that my raid array was degraded, so I deleted it since I couldn't get it to repair. then I recreated the array but it only showed the 2 wd250 sata's. so i set it to mirror. Now I get ERROR, hit any key to reboot when it posts and when I hit a key it pops up the same message. So, I Ctl_Alt_Del, go into cmos and it still shows all 3 drives. I thought maybe it changed the whole array to stripe when i added the 3rd drive, but after thinking about it I don't understand how it would even ask when the drive is not sata. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

I have 2 sata drives that were configured to mirror, and no longer would boot. So, i inserted a bootable drive and made it the boot drive. The problem is the sata drives don't show up in windows explorer so i can view their contents and run virus scan on them. Any suggestions?

I figured it out the day I posted but I really appreciate the help. Since then I have managed to develop a new problems (see "Now I think I have real problems with raid" posted earlyyyy today and "how do i se contents of raid drives as added drives under a differet boot drive" my latest post.

Thanx again

for raid i think you can use both sata and ide, but performance will be limited to the slowest if i m not mistaken

for raid 1 i think you need a pair for it to work so trying to get it to work on 3 drives is a no go.

in your other thread you mentioned that you dont see the content of your raid drives in windows, check if you have installed the drivers for the raid controller and that its working fine (see device manager)

see whats happenning in disk management too my computer / manage / disk management
