How do people make money online?

Some file sharing websites pays you for uploading files depending on the no. of downloads you get. However making money online that way by sharing copyrighted material online is illegal and blackhat and you dont want to take that route.
There are lot of other legit ways to earn money online - the easiest method is to start a website, update with fresh content regularly and integrate ads to the website. When you get visitors to your site and when they click on ads you make money. The key factor here is scaling up. The more content you have, the more visitors you will get and eventually make more money. One such advertising network is called "Adsense" from Google where you can get ads to use on your website and Google pays when someone clicks on ad. We only need to provide a space for ads on our website and Google automatically shows ads related to our website content. So if your website is about mobiles and gadgets then the ads will be like "buy X mobile from Y shopping site" etc. Did you see an image ad banner between our posts here? Its from Google Adsense. When someone clicks on the above ad, the forum owner makes money. Thats how it works.
If you dont want to start a website, then you can use other websites like Youtube, Squidoo etc. for posting content and earn a revenue share from ads posted on your content by these websites. But this is not easy as it sounds. For ex. with Youtube you need atleast a million views on your video to make anything worthwhile because ad clickthru rate on Youtube is very low compared to content websites.

AFAIK, there's no torrent sites that pays uploaders, as the concept of torrent is different from file sharing websites. However there are 2 types of people who try to make money utilizing torrent sites. First type will be the ones who have a forum or website where they list the torrent links and for each of their uploads on torrent sites, they will include a link to their website inside the files in the form of url shortcuts or as image, embedded in videos etc. This way people downloading the stuffs from torrent will happen to know about their website where they have integrated various methods to monetize the visitors in the form of ads etc. This is a free viral marketing technique.
Second type of people are those who upload malware/adware/trojans etc. in the form of "free software" , games, cracks etc. These malicious apps can perform things like stealing online banking credentials, credit card details, private user files etc. or even take control of your computer to form a botnet and do illegal things online. Torrent is the best way for hackers to spread these type of malicious programs and the monetary gain with this method is in the range of millions of dollars per month.
Either way, you shouldn't even think about going these route to make money online. The other legit methods I mentioned like creating a website is good to try. There is a variation of this method called "Affiliate Marketing" in which instead of just putting ads on website, you promote various products online through your websites/other social sites by writing reviews about the same. These can be physical products like phones, tv's, beauty products etc. or digital goods like software, ebooks, video training programs etc. When people read your review and buy the product online thru a special link called your "affiliate link" , you will earn a specific % as commissions for sale. Major e-commerce sites like Ebay, BestBuy and Amazon have affiliate programs like this though currently its targeted to USA, Canada, UK only. You can still join their affiliate program and earn money by promoting their products to those countries. There are a few affiliate programs for Indian e-commerce sites like flipkart, shopclues, homeshop18 etc. but they are in its infancy and the online shopping trend is not matured in India compared to developed countries.
There's a learning curve associated with making money online, so you should be willing to spend some time, money or both for learning and testing inorder to succeed.
Freelancing is also a good method. There are sites like odesk.com, getafreelancer.com, mturk, fiverr etc. where you can post your services and get clients for the same. This is a good method for side income if you are good at any of the stuffs like coding, graphics design, video editing, animation, writing etc.
"Making Money Online" is an endless topic to discuss and beyond the scope of this forum, So I would better stop now.
