How do you stop getting silly advertising messages from your cell phone service provider?

I tried the "Do Not Call" service once on my previous SIM card. I don't recall anything happening. Does it work for you guys?

It may take some time to activate so you'll have to bear until then. It has worked fine for me so far - I am on Vodafone. Previously, I used to get those annoying calls from +9114xxxxxxxx at least thrice a day about the offers and those promo msgs from others. They have all stopped now.

After activating DND I have started to get spam calls from landline and mobile numbers.
I've read quite a few complaints on some consumer court forums that despite registering for DND services multiple times, some (or many) operators aren't stopping their spam messages and calls. Also, I (and other people) keep having money deducted from my (our) balance for some weird service and messaging packs that I (we) didn't even subscribe for. I would go so far as to say that I don't even mind that telecom operators want to make some money through these spam messages, calls and service packs, but they should at least intimate the customer about these things when he/she is buying a new SIM (or maybe they did and I didn't pay attention).

I activated dnd on my Vodafone number 2 yrs back. No spam calls since then. Still get the occasional spam SMS from unknown numbers even now.
I think that unknown pack activation is done by airtel primarily. They've been doing that sort of work from past few years.

By Reliance too.

Earlier i used to get calls from 1409 xxxxxxx number but after DND those calls stopped but calls from landline and mobile numbers have started. Including the 1409 numbers I have 36 numbers blacklisted and I keep on adding more as and when a call comes.

How do you blacklist a number? Is it something specific to a particular cell phone or is it specific to a service provider?[DOUBLEPOST=1370694510][/DOUBLEPOST]
I use a sms blocker for sms spam. very effective. Not found any effective call blocker for Android yet though.

I have a normal Rs. 2500-3000 phone (bought it back in 2009). Useless for anything other than making calls and sending messages.

Oh sorry I think I wrote it wrong. With blocking I meant that I created contacts for them with name SPAM DO NOT PICK. So I don't pickup the calls when they come from known spam numbers.
But yes I had an app on my iPhone which actually blocked calls from such numbers, as in the app would pickup the call automatically and cancel it for the numbers I tell the app.

DnD works for me in delhi, but i keep getting spam sms from unknown numbers till date. No stupid calls though.

^^
I get everything. I feel no difference with DnD activated or off. F****** irritating. I rarely pick a land-line number, unless I know a friend will be calling from "outside". LIC/HDFC/ICICI are the biggest callers. Usually home loans and investment vehicles they peddle.

I was also getting those telemarketing calls very frequently which always started from +91140xxxxxxx. So i went to the settings menu->Call->Call rejection->Auto reject list->Add->+91140(with the option "Start with"). Now all those annoying calls get rejected automatically even without turning the screen ON. I can see them in my call log, they silently resides there with the "Blocked" symbol associated with it.

Helped me with blocking Tastykhana messages. They are just a nuisance once you give them your number. Never had sms issues with justeat or foodpanda.

I use - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.deepakj.smspam

One tap method to report spam messages to your operator. I've reported hundreds of numbers and Airtel creates a ticket automatically for each complaint. I've had Airtel reps call me and apologize for the amount of spam I get because of my reports.

Recently though, the amount of spam I receive has decreased substantially. Earlier where I would get at least 5-8 messages per day, I get about 2-3 now.
