I got Postpaid Tata Indicom BB.
They have given me a static ip !

What's the use / point of having a static ip ??

If somebody wants to connect to you remotely its very easy since your IP never changes.

You can also possibly link a DNS to your IP (Not sure about this one!) and host a website ;)

Its also better for VOIP and Conferencing, besides gaming is a lot easier through Direct IP connect.

Downside is, that if TE IP-Ban's you, then your screwed :P

another thing is, with dynamic IP, a lot of private trackers have diffuculty tarcking your data transfers and UD ratio.

How to do that ?? Say.. i want to connect from my office pc ??

Few examples:

Remote Access:

You can run a VNC Server on your home PC and from your office you can connect to your home PC by using VNC client. By using VNC you can have the total control on you PC by sitting remotely.

Try:

SourceForge.net: UltraVNC

------------------------------------------------

Run a FTP Server:

You can run a FTP server on your home PC to share files and from the remote machine you connect to that server using a ftp client. You can download/upload files from/on your home PC.

Try:

FileZilla Homepage - Index

Unless it is for a business concern it is never advisable to go for static ip.

Disadvantages include:
You can be easily tracked.
Online transactions are more likely to be prone to information hacking.
Some viruses repeatedly attack a fixed ip. Surely it will make an entry after some time. So you will be prone to virus attacks.
Some sites/forums ban an ip. In that case you are screwd.
Remote access if used has its own set of disadvantages.

Advantages of dynamic ip:
Less virus threats.
Easy to download files from various web hosting sites like rapidshare where you do not own a premium account. :bleh:

I would recommend you to opt for dynamic ip at the earliest. If required, change your internet plan.
Best of luck.

^ that can be solved by visiting their home pages because your ID is linked with the tracker so it would be know :)

You can allways do that but, with all due respect, its a PITA to go relogin evry time you have reconnected.

The main advantage that (for me atleast) is the ease of setting up various things like remote administration of ,for example Azureus through the HTML plugin) and such things. (I know that can also be done using dynamic DNS services such as no-ip etc. but a static IP can't beat a dynamic one in such areas.

Also, any one with any knowledge with computers can effectively protect himself from trojans/virii by using just an AV and a FW (me dont even use any FW only Nod32 with an ocassional spybot S&D and webroot spyware blaster scan.)

^ i guess ultravnc won't work if the machine you are trying to access is behind a proxy/firewall....one more option of using remote control from office - 'LogmeIn'...it creates a VPN between ur home/office pc with your office/home pc...doesn't matter if you are behind f/w, proxies etc...u can sign up for a free account..though no file transfers allowed for free accounts...give it a try...and u won't be dissapointed.

yeah LogMeIn is good.. Been using it for a while now.. U can share files on the host PC which u want to access thru the utility.. Then these can be worked on remotely..

Basically a static ip means that the ip address seen from the internet is always the same. For setting any kind of server up eg: game hosting, website, ftp, mail server, apache and so on.... this is really important, a dynamic ip is assigned by your isp and can change regularly.

Having a static ip has many advantages because of this, but as mentioned it is more likely to be attacked, so it is important to have good firewall protection. Many routers have this feature built in. For example the buffalo 54g and other routers based on the Broadcom chip design, have a firmware that is upgradeable to a really good open source firmware with a built in firewall called dd-wrt (click link for more info), an awesome and completely configurable firmware option that has a lot of very good security features. If you have not yet bought a router, check out the available routers that support it here

IMO it is one of the best open source router firmware choices available.

Raj Shah, you live in Sion right ?

If you do, please let me know how you find the Tata Service , uptime , download speeds etc since Deep Communications torrent download speeds have gone down too low and the higher speed plans are more expensive compared to Tata.

Lemme know.
