hi all
we all know that most airtel users on the 250 combo plan with night top up get speeds upto 512 kbps for one hour and then after that the speeds come down to 256 kbps.i would want to know how airtel does this in the middle of our connectivety.

what i heard from the mtnl NU guys, they r capped.so by default the speed shown in their routers is 256.but on an airtel , routers show 576/2160 ...

its out of sheer inquisitivety that this question popped into my mind, and someone experienced in networking could explain..

if you use a cable modem, the modem keeps communicating with the ISP. The modem thus is able to update itself with new firmware/updates. This is done using the tftp server.

Using a similar method, the ISP can also send certain commands like the amount of bandwidth to be used etc. to the modem. So, at the start of the designated time, the ISP passes the command to the modems in a certain subnet range to set their speeds to 512Kb/s (specified in bits/s i think) and after the completion of the time, they revert back to the drfault speed.

All this is done automatically w/o any user interference except probably for maintanance and/or plan changes.

Each modem is also identified by its MAC address so individial modems can also be controlled.

i'm observing the same with my net...mine is 32KB but for the last 3 days my d/l speed is over 60KB...good for me...

but don't know airtel may charge extra for this...

Nope thats not how its done, latest OS have TCP packet auditing built right into the kernel and its all done at kernel level. There is no need to keep information about all those MAC's. Those kernel just allow those many packets per sec to be passed on to the MAC as governed by the speeds.

NOW CAN AIRTEL DO THIS?

or is it a windows problem?

i'm on vista and due to the 1 hr speed cuts by airtel i have to reboot my router every hour.every thing was working fine a week before.router rebooted perfectly and everything.

now i have noticed a peculiar problem.every day after 12 am my router gets stuck.no http connections.torrents go fine but only to the peers i was connected before.telnet to the router does not work.the pppoe light is on though.to correct this i have to restart BOTH the router and windows, then everything goes fine.

strange thing about this is that happens around 12-12.30 am every day and the data transferred is always in the range of 500-550mb.there is no fixed time though.so what could be the problem?

How does that work when the packet size itself is variable?

bhoot hain yaha koi :o

i dont think that now.woke up last nite to see what happens.all the connections are lost EVERY 550 mb.

confirmed 2ay as well 550 mb@11.54 pm.

problem has been seen after the following things were done :
1.updated vista(not to sp1 yet)
2.installed hamachi

what do i do now?virus scan revealed nothing.will try to format now as thats the only option left!!

Airtel being a DSL connection, the customer configs are loaded on the dslam. means whenever the modem is turned on, it loads the config from the dslam. So since the download/upload speeds are set on the dslam, its only a matter of adjusting it.

but how does that explain the no-connection phenomena?restarting windows and the router only solves the problem!!

t-e gurus where are u all?so all my protocols are blocked, funny thing being i cant even open my router page that being http..did a diagnostic from vista and this is all it said..

what could be this absurd problem?
