Hi. I stay at chennai. As you know, its very hot in here in the summer. I am not thinking to buy an AC as I think I'll not be here til the next summer. Besides, the main requirements are for night and weekend days. The other two options are renting an AC or getting an Air cooler. Renting AC equals to 1200/- pm + 5000 deposit. OTOH, Air coolers are cheaper but I am not sure of their performance.

By the way, my room is around max 120sqft.

Air coolers will increase the humidity too much. In places like Chennai & coastal areas, this will be more of a discomfort than anything else. Probably the ventilation will increase, but by no means will it be as comfortable as an A/C. However, air coolers are more than sufficient, and in fact more useful, in areas with dry heat.

Rightly put, they are more effective in areas like Nagpur, Rajasthan. The air is really dry over there and the coolers works well there. Besides Air coolers have a major requirement of ventilation else due to humidity the heat just hits north. Go for AC. You can carry your AC anywhere you want.
