How good is TATAsky on 32" LCD tv?

I Am planning to buy 32inch LCD tv, went to stores looking out various models of sony/lg/samsung/toshiba/philips, the DVD content they play looks superb but my usage with LCD would be mainly TATASKY tv watching, most tatasky feed I saw looks horrible due to low res signals.

1. What is the native resolution in which tatasky digicomp give the input signals.

2. 16:9 ratios expands the images which make it look worse, switching to 4:3 is better

3.I will 80% watch TV, 10%will be DVD movies & 10% will be HDTV recored programs(Imax movies)

4. do we have dvds available of old & new hindi films in HD format (I know that I would need a HD compatible DVD player too)

Go for plasma dude if you are planning mainly to watch tata sky. In that also save money and try to go for low resolution ones. If you are planning to go for tatasky as your main watching criterion and gonna use LCD for that, IMHO, thats a waste, instead build an HTPC and use the LCD to its fullest. Using HTPC you will have excellent upscale capabilities and your tatasky would look partially better.

I am running Tata Sky on 32 inch. It maybe that I have got used to it, or maybe of late things are a lot better. When I bought my LCD on 1st Jan 07 the signal used to be very sad and things used to look pixalated when viewed from up close. Now things are better by a mile. Most channels look good barring few. BBC, Colors, AXN, Star and HBO all look great. Zee is still slightly suseptible to some pixelation. I dont know, never looked closely. But its much much better now than it used to be thats for sure.

I checked out & Plasma is mostly available over 40" & over my budget & not yet in smaller sizes & they are quite a power hog so that is ruled out as of now. Your suggestion for HTPC seems good as I have 3 yr old comp with creative sound card which I can hook to make a home theater. Which LCD Monitor & digital TV tuner card would u recommend for completing my HTPC.

I checked out yesterday at jumbo electronics & yes after watching for 20 mins i got used to it but the sales guy too confirmed that if only watching tatasky is the main purpose then LCD wont be any great viewing.

Hmm digital tv tuner card that are guaranteed to work with Tatasky is something that I can't comment upon. I am myself using the analogue channel :@ . ATM, the digital channels in DisthTV/TataSky/BigTV are closed one (proprietory) and unless you are willing for a hell lot of experimentation (brute hacking), you won't get good success. However even though with analogue one the quality through HTPC is really good (as mentioned before excellent upscaling).

As per as LCD is concerned :

Sony ~ Samsung > LG > Philips.

So mostly as per your budget go for Sony/Samsung. If possible wait for the diwali offer.

I have 10000/- budget for 19 inch 4:3 LCD monitor, either I buy that or use the budget to get a philips or sony CRT 21-29" TV as of now & wait for a year in hope that the reception of tatasky goes HDTV quality then buy a 40inch which will be costing less that time.

well lately i had bought a 21inch sony crt tv which costed 14k and let me tell u picture quality sucks and my old 21 inch sony which i had bought in 1996 is far better then the newer one,the spakling wega 2.0 tech is realy bad its the electronics that let this new tv down, the picture tube is fine the contrast levels are better then philips tv,but once u are used to a LCD its hard to go back to crts in my case the sony wega, the older tv is much easier on the eyes and picture is far better.

BTW i use big tv along with sony 32inch lcd and picture is fine, the picture is still in 4:3 format but even if u do strech the image the quality is acceptable, and u can get used to it,i have connected it via component out and the tv shows the reslolution as 576i and it does a better job upscaling via component then composite.channels like zee cafe are realy good when i watching who wants to be a soap star in zee cafe u can see the fine details, all channels have great quality by far the best picture i have seen among DTH providers,my friend who as a tata sky connected to 40inch sony W series lcd recently switched to big tv seeing the quality, offcourse the big tv stb occasionaly hangs, cannot say how the quality will be when they add further channels currently they are giving about 186ch which include their pay per view cinema channels.

Thanks for ur views, I too felt that my 10yrs old CRT is giving better results than the new CRT 21" which i saw in showrooms yesterday. I am swinging between to buy 32LCd or buy CRT for 1-2 yrs & later buy 42" LCD by then hope reception is better than what it is today.

best is go in for a SONY WEGA 29" 100 hertz flicker free CRT....it kicks LCD ass any day....its too f***ing awesome...

also fast action sports like football dont look gr8 on LCD's thru tata sky...they do look grainy n pixelated....

Sir,
Can you enlighten us on the highlighted topic? how can a HTPC upscale the DTH signals? is there any special kind of hardware/software available for this?

I think no indian TV signal has more than 550P reso. So we have full HD LCDs in India but no TV singnal that ca justify the HD LCDs sadly. 720P and 1080P movies rock on HD LCDs.

Every PC automatically upscales video when you make it ful screen ;)

NO extra hardware/software is required :)

dude its well over a year since they stopped producing the 29inch 100hz sony crt,and as far as the picture goes still doesnt match the old crts of 1998 or wega tv until 2004.and the sonyindia last 29inch 100hz crt was the DZ series and although better then the rest of crts available in the market still isnt as good as todays lcds.sony has messed up the wega engine, the older DA,DB series which was 100hz was better,i searched for that tv to no avail.
the only crt which can mount a serious challenge to lcds and plasma was the HZ series superfine pitch it also had the DRC MF1 engine that is present in the sony bravia X series lcd although tweaked for lcds ,and the HZ series 29inch used to costs about 89000,and 32inch lcds were actualy cheaper its the best trinitron picture tube produced to date.and unlike other crts sony tv this was a wide screen tv.

I downloaded some HD content from the web for demo but I cant find any hindi movie in HD format.

What all kind of content is available in HD format?

The HD demo looks good but I am not going to watch the demos whole day so I need some real content else I will go for CRTs as of now.

Sir, how about channeling the mpeg stream through filter post upscaling? Certainly can do that right? Hint: Tryout ffdshow/mplayer various tweaks.
