I've shortlisted the toshiba 40av10 at Vijay sales for 31,000. But some doubts about the 'soap opera effect' can it be turned off in this TV? Also does plasma actuallt increase the power consumption to double? Please help me make a decision. Any other good options in this price range? Thanks guys!!

When last time I compare (online specs) Samsung LED (iirc it was 32") with LG & other I found that Samsung LED TV consume nearly 50% less than other.

@gracek: if you are talking about the motion flow (100Hz) ; there should be a setting to turn it off as well.. Just check with the salesguy or fiddle with the menu

I just got mine installed yesterday.

I have no idea what you're talking about. This is a 60Hz TV and does not exhibit any effect of pixel doubling.

As to the TV itself, there is a bit of backlight creep in the upper two corners if you look at the TV from below the top. At the right viewing height and distance it looks absolutely fine with almost zero bleed. I have only 6-7 feet between myself and the TV as of now, so it gets a little weird on the eyes sometime - once I move everything to its correct location it should be fine. Even so, I watched a SD movie last night and could not find anything to complain about.

I had to tweak the factory settings to get it to look right. Out of the box the settings are meant to blind you. The backlight can be turned way down for a more natural picture, though the contrast ratio available is fairly poor - not much detail in the black areas.

At 31-32k (I paid 32k something off Flipkart) for a 40" screen I can't really think of a better option. If you go down one size and up one price range you can find a better 32" TV. I don't watch that much TV or that many movies, so a cheap option like this one worked fine for me.

I could not understand your question on plasma and why it might be relevant to this product. Anyway - yes, plasma TVs do hog a lot of power, but there are differences even between LCD sets. In Toshiba's range alone this particular set is one of the highest power consuming TVs, the newer 40 inchers are all around the 100W mark whereas this one runs about 200.

any idea of what is the panel that is used?

does it play other formats out of the box?

toshibas A.S.S is suspect. please check if proper support is available in your area before going forward with the purchase.

It looks like a cheap TN of some sort, because of viewing angle and poor contrast ratio. I would not trust that - the low level of black detail however leads me to think it might be IPS.

However for a small dimly lit room with a lower than average viewing distance, it is perfect. A TV with high contrast ratio would be useless as I would have to turn it down to the point where it delivers similar levels of performance. The backlight bleed is minimal and not offensive, and the lack of processing thingjigamigs means that even with huge pixels I get smooth motion even in fast action scenes.

It cannot play anything at all by itself - no USB port and no wireless.

You have to remember this is a two year old model with features belonging to that era. You should only get it if you're a cheapskate like me

I would disagree on the next post about service. I had a very prompt call for installation after delivery - the very same day. I could not get it installed because I needed some fixing hardware to travel all the way from Mumbai.

In any case the 1 year warranty is useless for these things. Usually some bits of these TVs start going bust in 15-18 months - specially the bits connected to the mains supply - so for the year you have it you face minimal issues and when you do face issues the TV is outdated and parts supplies become problematic.

Service attitude has been good so far, so keeping fingers crossed.
