Linux How Many of You Actually Use SUSE

Amarbir

Level D
Well,

i am Fan of this distro .I have purchased a old thinkpad specially for this distro and i love .I did try ubuntu and still could not find why people actually like ubuntu soo much .This is specially to the linux fans here ,Have you actually tried opensuse recently i love that os

These days you would try the latest OpenSUSE :) I think 11.4 is coming soon. I used to be on SUSE/OpenSUSE 4-5 years ago and liked it a lot especially since Ubuntu was new and I didn't know about it much. SUSE was/is polished and sophisticated. But these days I find all those little applets/control panels too much, so much is there to configure if you need it. But it is definitely an "advanced" distro with nice looks.

I was actually a long time OpenSUSE user.. I think till version 11.1.. after that I was frustrated with the patent deal which Novell made with Microsoft so I stopped using it and switched to Fedora. Fedora is on my system since forever.. I got so addicted to Yum that I find every other package manager, dumb. Now I tri-boot my system with Fedora 14, Arch Linux & Windows 7. Opensuse is still there in a VM..

Arch is the best distro I found till now. It's only for guys who like DIY, and an advanced distro which helps you to customise anything and everything and only install the things that you'd need/want. :D

I used OpenSUSE 11.2 and 11.3, but didn't liked it, don't know why it used to hand on my configuration.

+1 to that :P

@amarbir if you really want to learn all the internals of Linux and well.. theory of operating systems, you have to try Arch Linux.. It is ultra fast, bleeding edge and has an awesome package manager called pacman.. but make sure that you take the print-outs of the beginner's guide or should have another computer around you.. for more details, see our Arch Linux Thread

I use OpenSUSE from the days of SUSE 9.3 to 11.1.. I like YaST (Yet another setup tool) but when you compare the numerous settings of YaST to /etc/rc.conf file in Arch Linux, Arch simply wins. Moreover, YaST alone uses a lot of memory and CPU usage.

"One file to rule them all, one file to find them, one file to bring them all & in the userspace bind them" :D

Is your installation of openSuse fully up to date? If yes then post the output of uname -a command.. I just want to know what's the latest kernel version on opensuse

Oh you know about it already? Sounds like good advice :) I will try it (today maybe!) because its been a long time since I've seen it.

Just tried the 64bit KDE Live CD, nice and stylish. As usual though the menus are a little cluttered and YaST has all those applets crowded in there :D Its good for those who want to feel like "power users" with GUI.

Menu I have to click Menu->Internet->Web Browsers->Firefox (4 clicks), on Ubuntu there is one less click (Web Browsers section is not there).

But opensuse live CD has many apps already by default, TWO browser Firefox and Konqueror (KUbuntu only has Rekonq and you need to install Firefox separately if you want it). Must be because of advanced CD compression format used compared to Ubuntu.

Personally, I like to use Kubuntu because I like apt/dpkg system myself, even though OpenSUSE has RPM based zypper (advanced like Fedora yum).

For my mom/aunt, I install Ubuntu (GNOME) for its simplicity/clean look (or they use Win7 if they are using the laptop) :)

BTW Novell got sold off (or some bits of it) including the SUSE/OpenSUSE division to some other company, hopefully they will continue to support this distro which is essential to keep Linux desktop ecosystem healthy!

Well,

The Biggest Issue was when suse sold itself to novell and lousy company imho .That time suse was a top distro and it still is .I do not think when novell is out suse will fail it has a strong base of loyal users .
