i haven't actually used a dvd drive in years but when buying components for a new build, one normally gets a dvd drive.

i found that some of the drives would not work properly after just a few months.

i get the stuff from prime, for the last 3 - 4 years whenever i buy a dvd drive, i get a hp box pack because it is the only one that comes in a sealed box. most have worked for longer periods.

can someone explain why it is not possible to get dvd drives in a sealed box.

so, how do you guys buy/choose a dvd drive, and, whats the average life ?

ps : i have 2 cdr drives that are about 8 years old and 1 dvdr drive that is about 6 years old, both are ide (pata). on a old pc, and they still work ok.
edit : maybe i should ask this to the prime rep in this forum.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

Because you were not specific enough during purchase.
The ones not sealed are OEM drives which are cheaper than the retail dvd drives.
I had my experience with an OEM sony which lasted Me only for a year and a day.(366 days)
All others were Box sealed ones which lasted me more than 3+years. Have only purchased 3 upto now(1OEM +2 box packed). Ofwhich 2 are working fine. :)
So no OEM drive for me.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

three of my dvd reader/writer died within 2 years now using the 4th one..they are cheap.:)

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

last year bought HP box pack (ide) & it knock down with first DVD record trial only. Exchange it with LG (open pvc bag with CD & manual) still working good with secondary system.

I amazed how this LG product still going strong with me :) as each of other LG products exactly died the day warranty over :( this is reason that still today I always hesitate to buy or recommend LG products.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

it seems LG has good DVD writers
mine working mine for 5 years
was RMAed once at end of first year.

May be LG collaboration with Hitachi is reason behind Strong BEST Quality :)

Whenever I ask for a box pack, I am given a open box. Except for HP, at Prime.
What I want to know is : does anyone get a sealed box, where, in Mumbai.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

My Box Packed LGH44N IDE DvD-RW still works fine after 4 years of usage, burning over 1000 discs. Even after I broke the tray loader :cool2:.

My friend has lost 2XBox packed LITE-On SATA drives box packed, 1XSony(NEC) SATA OEM all after ~ 1year of use.

I just prefer LG because it lasts longer. And they provide firmware updates too.

For me the price difference between OEM and box packed versions was ~ 150 bucks, ASUS, Pioneer and HP drives all cost 200-300 bucks more than other drives. And LG came only in Box Packs. One thing missing in my LG drive NO disc quality scanning :( .

Yes you do, I've seen box packed stuff for LITE-ON, MOSER-Bayer, LG, SAMSUNG, ASUS, HP, Pioneer, BenQ, a few old models of Sony all are available with prime. It all depends on the availability.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

The sealed box packs of almost all drives are available. You have to ask for it though. No one is gonna give it to you.
Shop keepers will even try to tell you there is no difference in them. Some do say we sell only oem drives.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

the key word is sealed. as in 'not possible that this one has been opened so far'. either a unbroken cellophane wrap over the box. or a intact cellotape sticker.
please mention exactly which shop at lammy you got one from.
i'm willing to pay more than what a oem one costs.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

Sealed or not I dont know but my LG Box pack was laminated from outside, I've seen similar laminated box piece for Sony too but I've no idea about other brands.

Ask Swapnil @ Prime he gave me two Sony DvDRW's to choose from OEM ones and Box Pack ones, so it implies they clearly know about it, and believe me Prime wont Cheat in that case, just tell them in detail what you need before hand.

in lamington i found sealed dvd drives for samsung, sony and HP at dynamic. Other than that i found most old pc shops in my locality (the one with a lazy uncle ) in it :P all having sealed samsung drives along with HP ONES but expensive by a good 400 bucks.
The last time i bought the HP sealed box was from dynamic computers.

My LG OEM is still running its been 2yrs + now ...

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

Read it on sony website that the company offers only 90 days of warranty for oem drives. Only retail drives carry full years warranty.
So i generally try to avoid oem drives from Then.
@ ^^ i never said oem are crappy but the fact that company like sony reduces warranty on them is good enough reason for Me to avoid them.

Re: how many ot you get a dvd drive in a sealed box ?

i've tried at prime, except for hp they never had any sealed box dvd. in the last 3 - 4 years.
the ones that failed in a few months were also bought from prime.
swapnil know me - i've bought a lot of stuff from prime. still ....

Well then I'm sorry to say that we(me and A LOT of my friends) never purchased any sealed box DvDRW Drive, we only bought what was given to us by Prime and I definitely dont regret buying it :D ,i.e, DvDRW Drives in a Box but we did refuse to buy the OEM one's.

Difference between the two according to me are as follows :

1. Slight Difference between the model numbers. So if you know the correct model numbers you are sure to get the correct drive.

2. Absence Of a supplied DvD Burning Software in an OEM piece.

3. Absence of extra Front Tray Panels in OEM.

4. Absence of screws in OEM.

5. And the obvious, OEMs come in a plastic bag as opposed to complete packaging in case of BOX PACKED.

I got Samsun with box but it 2 years before.

BTW,how many of you get a HDD in a sealed box ?

HDD is most important for me but never get with box except when I last bought at 2002.....

^ hdds at least come in a sealed anti-static bag.
if dvd drives also came that way it would be nice.
i have a nagging suspicion that dealers pawn off returned/substandard/slightly defective dvd drives to people like us while giving the good stuff to customers/clients who buy larger quantities.

^you are partly correct. The oem drives are the ones which are taken off from branded pcs.
Since branded pcs are bought by major institutions where having a writer is not essential. So they are removed off by dealers.
And since such institutions buy in bulk these drives are sold off to pc dealers.
What you get as an oem drive is actually a better deal for the dealer since He has a bigger profit margin with such drives.
Also rma of such drives might be a problem through proper service channels. But if the dealer takes care of it. He can even give you another drive as a replacement(ideal case).

When last time I purchased from Prime (July 2011) I got LG DVD writer in plastic bag but with Software DVD from LG but NO Screws & NO EXTRA FRONT PANEL (may be they removed both as I order Black Cabinet from them & the stock panel with LG DVD writer is black & with CM Elite cabinet DVD screw was there).
