Laptops How much does it cost to repair a toasted laptop ethernet controller?

Here is the prob.

My uncle has a compaq lappy which was fine untill 2 days back.Then during a thunderstorm,it went dead.It was connected to the internet via ethernet

When he took the comp to the dealer,they asked him 9k for replacing the blown Ethernet controller.I think that is a rip off.

So what do u guys think will it cost to replace that IC?

Another thing is,how much does it cost to replace the mobo of a lappy?

The model is Compaq Pressario 2500.

PS:

1.He lives in Hyderabad so if u know any reputable service ppl from hyd,pls let me know.

2.That thing is out of warranty.Thats why im concidering 3rd party service people.

An internal Ethernet card for the Compaq ought to cost a hell of a lot less than that. Its on a seperate board that just needs to be replaced.
 
hmm..the problem seems to be that,the whole thing is not booting up.Its not like that the system is fine and only the LAN is dead.
 
Laptop mobos should be costly since they have to be custom built to manufacturers requirements. Also I think in most cases the processor is soldered to the mobo. Dont know if this is the case with modern laptops too..
