From RBI's site:
In connection with private visits abroad, viz., for tourism purposes, etc., foreign exchange up to US$10,000, in any one calendar year may be obtained from an authorised dealer.

Has anyone faced any problems while flying out? Does immigration check these limits?

Till now I have travelled twice in two different countries with US$3500. Though this amount is much lesser than limit, I have not been asked about this by immigration of any country.

Only incident I could relate this to somewhat happened to me when I was with 'on arrival VISA' at Hongkong. Immigration officer there asked me how much currency I am carrying? But this is generally verified in VISA so nothing out of the way.

usually its 10K in "cash" if you want to carry more than that you will have to get either a travel card or traveller's cheque. carrying 100K USD in cash will escalate it to very high level.

x-ray checked not customs checked.

US is unique like this in not having customs when exiting the country. The ticketing check in counter does the job.
