I am planning to upgrade me cpu + board from a 1.5 year old AMD X4 955 BE + Gigabyte 785 GMT USB3 to an Intel Core i7 3770(not the K version) + a Gigabyte B75 DP3 board. My uses comprise of occasional gaming (FPS+racing) which my Ati 5850 caters to perfectly, watching movies, general desktop use (ms office, general productivity solutions, music, web browsing, ebooks, downloading torrents, etc). I will not be overclocking my system.I plan on keeping this setup for the next 3-4 years atleast. Will the above solution suffice? Also is an after market heatsink necessary for my needs?

Is your existing setup hampering your usage? Cause that's a pretty decent configuration for your kind of usage (atleast for the next year if not 3-4).

well resale would matter - i can get a decent price for the existing setup now - a year later i will get nothing.

As I see it..
the extra money you will be getting by selling your rig now will be LESS THAN the money that can be saved by waiting to upgrade to an i7 for an year or so..

This way you will end up upgrading every two years. Your current config is pretty good even for 3 years.

Assuming I play Crysis 2 / BF 3 @ 1920x1080 on my Dell G2410H with a Ati 5850 (MSI Twin Frozr 2) with 16 gb of GSkill Sniper ram being the common factor with both the setups what is the sort of difference I can expect in performance?

Example - AnandTech - Bench - CPU

The benchamrks show 30-70 % difference in performance.
