Hello guys,

A lil noobish question here,:ashamed:

All these days i used to allocate 20gb each for 4 partitions on my 80gig HDD,
So the c: (windows partition) is 20gb and i used to install all apps on c:, and i used to re-install all the apps on c: everytime i formatted

I've seen many people allocating only 5-10gb for the windows partition and all the third party apps are installed on d: or any other drives, Is this a healthy practice? What if u happen to format the c: and install a fresh copy of windows, Can all apps from the d: run without any problem??

P.S- Help to allocate spaces for 4 partitions on a 250gb hdd.

Thank you :ashamed:

^^ I have a huge collection of movies and photos on sevaral DVD's and I plan to save them on diffrerent partitions so that they're all organized well :)

Dont u think installing apps on other partition other than windows drive create a mess after formatting and reinstalling the xp drive? Reg entries/shortcuts/quick launches??

1. People install programs on separate partition cos I believe the logic is to have the partition on a separate HDD. That way you can have more data access in parallel (OS and programs). So should improve perf, come to think of it. How much? Will probably depend on th eprogram and how heavy it is ;)

2. Yes, on reinstalling, this partition will need to be cleaned and all programs installed again anyway.

3. @Cooldude: Yes, you need to organise stuff well, but think about it once again.

a. In case you run out of space on any of the partitions, all that organisation goes to waste since you will need to store the data on another partition not meant for it originally. Flexibility is gone.

b. Instead, if you just have 2 partitions (1 OS and 1 data) and have 4 folders with stuff organised inside them inside the data partition, your stuff still stays organised but with flexibility to grow either folder in the future as your needs dictate.

Which scenario sounds better? :)

PS: I used to do the separate thing too initially, but as data grows and you outgrow 1 partition, everything gets messed up. A folder approach is much much more flexible as per any requirements :)

i have 7gb c partition for xp
rest all in the next d parttion
no need to create 4 partions
2 are enugh

create 1 more partition only if u require two operating systems

otherwise 1 partition for win xp the rest all in 1 big drive with with as many folders u want it to be

lets say u make the c drive between 7-10gb. u wont need more than that for normal usage like office. photoshop n few other things to install for

@techie Thats really smart, Will merge the allocated partition to 1 and a separate one for windows. :) :hap2:

@mohit, I've allocated 20gb for the windows drive, which i think will suffice for all the programs that i install :)

i install MS office, Adobe CS4 Master collection, media players etc etc etc in C: for peace of mind while installation (Jst keep cliking "Next" blindly) :)

hence a 30GB C:\ (above mentioned stuff is kinda hvy + Huge Constant PageFile of 8GB allocAted for a 2x2GB RAM)

Whereas all games go into a seperate partition of 100GB (I defragment this partition 1nce a mnth)

And all data/setups/movies/songs go into the remaining 330GB. (No defrag needed here)

(500GB hard drive)

smart people keep a ghost of their c drive with all the programs installled on a seperate hdd. that way you can format your c drive 100 times and get back all the programs within 15 mins by restoring the ghost :)

good article..there is guide in the sections.that guy suggest only to install winows in the c drive and keeping 70% free. then he reg edit and make the default application installation in another driver (D)-where all the applications and games are installed. and keep another driver (E) for data-music,video,movies,download and all. I like that guide and going to try it in my 8ogb

Thanks

download hiren's boot cd from isohunt .. you will find ghost and many other good softwares like ghost :hap2:

i hate norton ghost :@ coz wenever i restore image from ghost, it always ends up in a buggy windows..

for instance " Program has caused an error , and will now stop"

If you plan to install softwares on same partition where XP will be installed then make it over 10gb..

Only for System 5-7GB is enough...

I have not used any backup software till now in my pc so far. XP is quite stable and I generally need to reinstall it once in a year.Till now I only installed xp for not more thn 5 times.

I kept my C driver as 20 gb with windows and other applications installed.keeping 6-7 gb free all the time.

remaing 50 gb i used to install games and other media.

I have another 20 gb hdd which i used as a single drive for data only.

i defrag my once in a week and it runs fairly fast.
