How much should I pay for an iPhone 2G?

So I really miss owning the iPhone, and was planning to pick up either the 2G or the 3G. I can get the 2G for around Rs. 13,000 or the 3G for Rs. 20,000.

Which one should I get? Is the price for the 2G any good? Can I upgrade the 2G to the latest firmware - and if yes, has the latest firmware been cracked?

Basically, the service plan that I'm on doesn't support 3G, so I'll be using Edge on either one, and I kinda like the metallic back of the 2G better than the plasticy 3G.

Thanks.

Yeah same case with me. I didn't like the Plastic impression in 3G, 2G looks far better and elegance. I was using the 3G(16GB) for some days during my stay in Delhi, I liked the GPS which we will be missing in 2G. Firmware can be upgraded, many have done it. 2G stands more sturdy compared to 3G as the one I was using had a long crack on the back(Plastic) panel. It looks so cheap!!! No wonder Chinese can easily copy the 3G(look wise) but I have never seen a True copy(look alike) of 2G. Feature wise I think 3G is better. So take a deep breath and decide...

2g can be updated to the latest 3.1.2. It's cracked.

You will miss out on MMS / GPS if you buy the 2g over the 3g.

Donot buy the 2G. Its not worth it. There are many issues with Power Circuit and Touchscreens are prone to die. That is unless you happen to be lucky. 3G 8GB good price is around 14K while 16GB is around 18-19K. They are worth it. Will cause much less issues over time.

PSSST: A new 3G back housing costs 300 bux on eBay, and looks as good as new. I am using it.

I don't think you can get those prices for the 3G anywhere on the planet. What issues are you talking about? :S

@nitant: care to share the source of quoting of such prices for 3g.

@Keane : Even I'm in the same dilemma... But I'm like more inclined towards 3g coz of sleekness, better battery life & GPS & moreover good 2g pieces are hard to find...

Be realistic yaar. You can never get a good 3g at those prices !
And the back housing you are talking about, you remove the original and put that on ? or is it like an add-on cover at the back ?

I repair iPhones for a hobby. I got my iPhone(unlocked) on TE for 19.5K. Its a 16GB. Cost me 500 for a back housing. Had to open mine, but hey, its not really a big deal for me.

It took me another 4 Months to find another 16GB for 18K. White. Passed it onto a good friend.

It takes time to find a good deal, but that is what the Real World(TM) prices are.

As far as 2G issues go, I receive every month atleast 10 iPhones (same ones again n again mostly), which will refuse to charge, or will not start without adapter. Read Here http://www.hackint0sh.org/f131/19204-7.htm

The solution is a jumper to be made on the mainboard after force charging the battery using a external power source. Once the iPhone has enough juice to power on, it will resume charging.

Touchscreen issues are more than rampant on the web. I had this iPhone 2G everything worked, you could unlock(slide) the Phone, do everything, except that the last row would not work.

The only solution, new display panel from another phone. Costs around 4-5K.

@All the people who bought iPhones from me, dont worry. The ones u got were exceptional pieces and I doubt will ever have issues.

PS: 3GS will launch next year. Sometime around Jan/Feb.

do you know anyone selling a 3g at 13k ?? ill be the first one to pick it up ..!!

sorry for the OT,keane. hope you dont mind .

By the way I know of a few shops in vashi selling box packed refurbished Iphone 3G 8/16 GB models for 15k/19k respectively. will inquire and let you know.

My Iphone 2G 16GB works perfectly with OS 3.0.1 ,even the battery is pretty good(6-7 hrs of usage and 25-30 hrs standby).

Only problem is cosmetically it is in a very bad shape due to a few drops :ashamed: and my usage .The top most glass layer of the screen has a crack (does not affect the touch sensitivity even one bit) and even the back metal body of phone has lots of scratches and 1-2 dents.

@ Nitant . do you have any idea how much does a 99% original body of a Iphone 2G 16GB costs ? is it available anywhere in Mumbai ? If its not available or is very expensive.. I was planning to get this all black metallic body and chrome bezel from ebay.(damn expensive again :( )

Have a look at this classy Iphone 2G .

I previously had an iPhone 2G for about a year, and didn't have ANY trouble with it whatsoever. So I think I'm just going to get the 2G.

Edit: Ordered a brand new 2G for 14k after taxes. :)

Brand new? where from ?

The production of 2Gs is stopped long back.

I used the words brand new loosely. It's an Apple refurb - they're actually supposed to be better than new ones (batteries, well-inspected, etc). USofA.

@Keane 16

Can you pls tell which is best place to take refurbished iPhones 3G in USA & what range it would be available ?

Basically I want to know this, If I have an iPhone with a scratched back, the housing you are talking about just covers it up or replaces the original one ?
(like nokia bodies ?)

Thanks a lot for clearing that. I already started worrying after reading about your 'activities' with the iPhones :P
