How much space does Vista Ultimate X86 need on C drive

Only OS with handful of utilities

Games,pagefile and data on another drive. As on 160GB now, hence asking to optimize partition space allocation

i would say that dont go below 35GB. If you also plan to store your pictures and videos in the User Folder, than about 40Gb atleast.

Vista with a few basic utilities should be done in about 25GB with ease.

The Windows folder on my HDD occupies 16GB if that's what your asking.

But yeah, anything between 25-30GB would be a safe bet if your NOT planning to install your applications on the same partition.

If you are, then 40-50GB would be the bare minimum.

I have created a 20GB partition for Vista.

Just like you i shifted the pagefile to Non OS drive.

Hibernate also Off.

Only small applications installed on system drive like messenger, browser, media players etc ... others like office etc installed on another drive.

C: drive status : 10.9GB used and 8.55GB free.

With this config, you cannot make use of the sleep feature, the free space on the system disk keeps getting nearer to capacity as the system restore and previous versions use up the disk space.

Also, did u vlite your Vista?
To get a proper experience, especially when you have the free space, keep ample free space for the Previous Versions feature (Very Usefull!!), System Restore, and future updates and installations if you dont like to format often.

@alsiladka

I have turned off System Restore as well.

No.

I would say the partition size depends on the requirements of the user. Since i dont use system restore, hibernate etc .... 20GB works for me.

For general usage, 30-40Gb partition would be good enough for vista.

I have created my very own version of Vista Ultimate using vlite and it consumes around 12GB of HDD space including SP1. And dat's with System Restore enabled. :ohyeah:

There are language packs in Vista which consume nearly 4Gig of space. Remove those and u save 4GB. :)

Don't think you have to move your page file to another partition/drive as in XP. Can't remember where I read this, but IIRC, it's best to leave it where it is in Vista

yupp.. its always better to have a huge partition in C drive...

Whatever you have.. as the day goes the number of patches that MS releases might fill the drive... :bleh:

The space in a Vista root drive changes a lot (you'll find it'll grow and then shrink). This has to do with the WinSxS stuff in it which first grows and then is garbage collected periodically.

I'd advise you to have a large partition. Plus, if you really want to make use of some of the better features (folder redirection, which enables older programs to work without admin privileges), you are going to need to install all program files to C:\program files (x86), which means you need enough space for the programs you want too.

About 12.75 GB free in my 35 GB drive for Vista Ultimate x64 :P , and winsxs folder is 10.8 GB :P ... i have a 1 GB pagefile on a different partition (on a different Hdd altogether :P) and i install all the apps on a different partition .. so i'd suggest u keep a vista partition about 20 GB atleast :P ..

comparing with you is invalid as you always do some modding with your os :P

plus you must have turned off system restore which is a big lifesaver

my C drive:

winsxs folder = 13.1GB

hiberfil.sys = 3.99GB (due to 4GB RAM)

pagefile.sys = 4.29GB (due to 4GB RAM)

Program Files folder = 2.76GB

Users folder = 3.25GB

rest of Windows folder = 10GB

rest of C drive = 338MB

and i install all the apps on a different partition too

so 40-50GB = bare minimum

^^ nah i never turn off system restore on my os drive :P i don't use hibernation :P and thats it ... i do clean the os drive every weekend :P ..

Also if i remember correctly , the winsxs folder size will vary depending on the actual partition size :P ..

is my pagefile too large?

On a 4GB RAM rig, it is a waste of diskspace. Pagefiles were needed when the system did not have enough RAM. Right now, on normal use, your 4GB ram is itself not going to be fully utilized, keep checking the cached amount of RAM via the task manager to see the proof.
You could limit your pagefile to 2GB for a start and test if it effects your system.
