Well, I am having this peculiar problem with a laptop. I am installing XP on it and for last six hours its loading setup files! Is it normal/possible on a healthy machine?

specs

Lenovo 3000 C100

1.73GHz Pentium M processor, running on the 915 chipset and 256 MB RAM

Of course it's an old laptop and why it's getting a fresh OS installation is because:

* It was making a sound (trrrrrr trrrrrr) every time I used to right click while on desktop.

* The laptop was populating each text field with \\\\\\\\ automatically whenever I used to click in such field. For example it was not even allowing me to put password while logging in windows using admin account. Hence I was forced to try and diagnose the problem with a user account that required no password but was also not having full system access.

* NOD32 caught a few viruses and so did Avira. But Hijackthis log was clear.

All please pitch in ... as quickly as possible!

6 hours...No way dude..

Just try installing it once again.Make sure you donr have USB drivers connected to your pc and also unplug the network cable.

:D

It may be due to the bad media that has the XP setup or even due to the bad lens that your laptop cd drive has.

Try copying the setup files on USB and do a usb installation, make sure to go to bios and give the appropriate boot priority.

I have a feeling that it's the hard drive which is culprit here. I should have a run a diagnostics on hard drive before I began OS installation.

@ Techman, USB trick is nice... will try that.

like they said above....about 40 minutes to max an hour is the time required...

you should check your hard drive.

YEs it seems optical media is the problem try getting a linux live cd and check your HDD for any kind of errors. I don't think windows xp will be very smooth on that machine though.

Is it resolved yet ?

well, it was resolved. At least I was able to install the windows fine. and it was installed in around 45 minutes. But the original problem (///////// in the text fields and the clicking sound) persisted. From scanning for rootkits to reformatting drive, I did everything but the could not manage to find a solution. Finally gave back the laptop to its owner.

Like you mentioned viruses must be there for sure. But, I'm suspecting bad sectors in your HDD. If there is bad clusters then you should get it replaced and if there are viruses then just make your important files into a back up and format the entire thing. Then try re-installing.
