Hi,

I recently got an offer of buying an second hand, used laptop with following specs:

Compaq Presario V3225AU(Part No: RY301pa#ACJ)

AMD Turion 64 MK-36 (2.0 GHz) /1.5GB DDR2 (667 MHz) /80GB SATA HDD / 8X SuperMulti Double Layer (8.5GB) DVD Writer / 14.1" Widescreen WXGA TFT Display with BrightView Screen Technology / NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 6150 / Upto 128 MB shared memory / Altec Lansing Stereo Speakers / 5-in-1 Digital Media Reader / 56K Modem /Integrated Wireless LAN 802.11 b/g / LiIon Battery / TouchPad / S-Video TV Out / 3 USB 2.0 / MS Windows Vista Home Basic

My friend is saying its 1year old & is selling laptop for 10k.

My Questions are:

1) When was this model closed by Hp? how long ago? Appox time? Because, I think this model is way older than 1 year. My friend does not have a bill. Please help me get an idea on age of this machine

2) Any known problems with this machine? I noticed Its battery has problems, gives only 1hour backup & the AMD proccy runs hotter.

3) Lastly, what would everyone advice on buying this laptop? Plan to use this laptop for browsing & movies only. Should I buy this machine? If yes, then what would be fair price?

Do not buy V3000 unless you can have some kind of active cooling to cool it down. Also don't play games on it... It was bogged with overheating problems & subsequently failed displays all over the world. I'd this laptop few years back & had to RMA it twice to get the mobo replaced (It has onboard nVidia 6150 which was notorious to heatup). Don't blame the AMD chip which was actually running cooler than nVidia 6150 :@

@Hailstone.

Thanks for your advice, it seems this model is troublesome & I might end spending lot of money on repair.So I have dropped the Idea & Brought a new Sony Vaio instead :D

@hahahari,

So model is about 2-4yrs old. it doesn't make sense to buy this from seller which lying. Not sure what else he could lying about :|

^Its quite true. I replaced it with XPS Studio 1645 and although it was a gaming laptop ran far cooler than the compaq. It hit almost 100 and the auto shutdown dint work often.

AVOID! (Specially if your planning to use it as a 24x7 download box)

Googling for this reveals that this model was bought by some poor chaps 2~4 years ago, and they have over heating issues with it. Anyways, even looking at the features~ Vista, 667MHz RAM, 80GB HDD, S Video out, it is quite old, IMO 2 yrs at least.

Yep i own one too!the v3228au model to be specific....seems the one similar to the above quoted! though the lappy never failed on me it does run amazingly hot and due to this the battery starts loosing charge due to subjection to the intense heat!!! when i took mine for cleaning service at the authorized hp service center guy himself told me to get rid of it because it had cent percent issues with the nvidia 6150 chip!!! he also told me that my heat sink was at 40% life/efficiency and a replacement would cost approximately 4.5-6k!!! he told me to sell it (this happened two years back) but i kept it as my download /general rig with a laptop cooler (than cheat some hapless soul) and touch wood it works just fine!!!the only problem is that its totally tethered now and hence has lost its portability (battery holds charge for less than 1 min!!!). i know i have been lucky ...i swore i would never buy an AMD lappy!!! (yep though it had nothing to do with the issues facing this!!!)
