Which is better: to charge the laptop battery only when its empty, or to use the charger whenever its available? I heard very various opinions about this issue, so I want a definitive answer. I have an Asus K61IC.

I mostly use it off the battery. Only time I use it alongwith the charger is when during use the battery hits 10%.
I normally charge it when the laptop is turned off for about 45 minutes. This ensures that I don't cross 80% battery charge.
In short if you plan to prolong the battery life -
Do not use the charger if it is not for charging.
If you do plan to use the charger detach the battery (provided you have a stable electric connection).
Once in a while drain the battery.
Avoid Full Charge.
