Hello techies,

I am not able to access my WIN 7 shared folders/computer name from my other WIN7 PC without entering a password. I dint create any password in win7 computer B , and when i access it from WIN7 computer A, i am asked for username and password which is very annoying. I turned off password protected sharing in computer B, but i get some error. So i used a password for name sake and i enter that password and username to gain access to the B computer's shared folders...

I have mapped a shared folder of computer B as Z:\ in computer A. Today by mistake when i tried to open the mapped drive Z: i was asked for the UN and password as usual. But by mistake, i just keyed in the UN without typing the password. After this i am not able to access the mapped folder for 2-3 minutes and a dialog box pops up saying that i have typed the wrong password inspite of having typed the correct pass.

Guys, Because of the above reasons i dont want the UN/pass dialog box to appear in windows 7 and windows XP ( I have both in computer A) . Plz guide me how to do this guys..

For remote desktop i configured it in the local security policy. Now it never asks for UN/pass. But for accessing shared folders/computer name please show me the route to do it without having to enter either UN/password like we do in XP computers...

Thanx in advance

In Windows 7 default security has been strengthen and you cannot access anyone’s shared folder on the same network without providing the correct login information.

On the computer that has shared folder, go to Control Panel and if it shows icon view, select Network and Sharing Center. If it is on a category view, Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center. On the left pane, click on the “Change advanced sharing settings” link. Scroll down until you see Password protected sharing. By default the Turn on password protected sharing in Windows 7 is enabled. All you need to do is select the “Turn off password protected sharing” and click the Save Changes button.

Now anyone who is on the same network (LAN) would be able to access the shared folders on that computer without password.

Note : However when the computer connects to an outside network or wifi make sure that option is re-enabled or just unshare the important folders.

^ thanx but i have already tried that before creating this thread. Finally found out myself. Apart from configuring the network settings of win7 i relaxed certain restrictions under Bitdefender firewall and now its ok. However entering the username is mandatory and it cannot be bypassed. Password field can be left blank....

I have configured win 7 and accessing shared folders from vista pc without any password. Apart from turning off the win7 password protected sharing, you have to change the securtiy settings of the folder being shared. Make it read only for everyone/homegroup at least.
