How to add subtitles(.srt) to movies?

I recently downloaded a french movie 'Monsieur Ibrahim' for which i want to add subtitles.
I have d/l the subtitles,but dunno how 2 add them to the movies.

Drag and drop to VLC works!

Choose subtitles frm menu after dropping on to VLC.

Same thing for BS Player play the file and drag and drop the .srt file on the video.

Rename the srt file to same as the movie file and place it in the same folder as ur movie file and open it with mplayer classic , if u have klite codec pack installed.

subtitle filename and movie filename must be same eg: " abc.avi " and " abc.srt"
both files shd b in same dir.

If you want to add them permanently, do the following. You will have to render the whole movie and re-compress it, but the dubs will be hard coded into the movie

Download VirtualDub, and open avi file.

Make sure your subs are in .ssa format. If not use SubResync which is a part of the vobSub program, to convert subs to .ssa.

Under the video menu in VirtualDub, click on Filters ( It will be grayed out if you do not have the full compression settings on.)

Click on add, and select subtitler, then it will prompt you to open your .ssa file.

Click on ok, and there you go......

This assumes you have some knowledge to set the compression settings yourself. I would suggest installing the latest version of DIVX, then you will be able to choose from the DIVX presets in the compression settings.

just 1 thing, u gave the above procedure to permanently add the sub to the movie,but if u just keep the .srt file in the movie folder & rename it,i guess every time u play the file from the folder it'll give subtitles ( as per the explanation given by bvaghisa & quad)

You can drag and drop in VLC and KMPlayer.. Use KMPlayer.. its much easier to resyncy subtitles in it under subtitles menu if you ever manage to download a outta sync subtitle..which is very much probable..

I gave this as an alternative, but yes if you are playing off the computer, you would be fine not to hard encode the subs.

The reason I gave this option, was in case anyone else was interested and wanted to play movies with subs on another medium other than the computer...like a PMP, or a DVD/DIVX player (they sometimes have probs with subs.) I usually will hard code subs for movies I my playing through my DNLA server on my PS3.

Depends on what you are doing with it I guess....

Hey everybody,

Assuming u all have Windows Media Player 11,
Install VobSub 2.37. Put both the .avi & .srt file in d same directory. Just name both the files d same. Start the .avi in Windows Media Player & it would automatically show the subtitles. And subtitles look better in WMP11 rather than VLC.
While burning DVD's for ur DVD Players just ensure dat u burn them as is in PC with the avi & srt in a single folder. Burn d folders on ur DVD not d files directly for better compatibility. This is because DVD Readers scan d media in d same location for subtitle files. However, some players can scan it from d entire media. Depends upon d player u have.
