How to connect two computer

I have my office laptop which i want to connect to my home pc. Can it be possible via generic lan cable. I dont have a router. Please guide

you can use a crossover cat5 cable to connect the two directly
or use a hub or switch with normal cat5 cable
if you are running xp you may have to run the network wizard on both computers after connecting them

I am running xp,sp2 on both of the machine.what is "crossover cat5" ?? how to make it??? any luck
