Hi there!

I just installed vista release build 6000.The problem is vista didn't install the video drivers (onboard nforce 630 ASUS m2n-mx DX9).So i downloaded the nvidia drivers and they got installed (i checked the device manager to confirm that they have indeed been installed)

Now the problem is that if i goto the desktop>personalize i dont see the aero option there. So is there anything i should do to enable aero?

Here are my specs:

AMD X2 3600+ CPU
ASUS M2N-MX mobo
1GB Dynet DDR 533 RAM
Seagate 250+80GB HDD
Onboard graphics with DX9 and SM3.0 support

thanks in advance!

Try this...

Open registry editor and go to following location

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows

1. Create a key called DWM (If it doesnt exist)

2. Create a Subkey inside and name it Composition of type DWORD and set its value to 1.

3. Create another subkey named EnableMachineCheck of type DWORD and set its value to 0.

4. Reboot machine.

This should enable Aero even if the GPU is not in the supported list. Just make sure that you GPU can handle it.

how can that be when all the minimum specs are met (a dual core CPU,1g of RAM,DX9 compatible card)?

i dont think u need a dedicated card as the new intel 965 being an onboard card supports vista

the one i installed has a name "Vista Enterprise Post RTM" dunno what it is(home basic/ultimate/premium etc)

Do a winver on the run window, that should tell u the version you are running, coz vista home basic does not have aero.

it is notnecessary stuff..becoz my frnd used to run winxp on 128mb ram..when it used to say minimum 256mb ram required

Well actually its not that Aero cannot run on a low end card, but it seems that many cards have been excluded from their support list for Aero since they do have compliant drivers or they are a bit slow to handle vista. Vista checks the hardware and turns on Aero accordingly. The registry hack enables Aero forcefully and the setting the MachineCheck key to 0 will disable the hardware check that Vista performs.

Point to be noted is that MS prepared that support list for a reason. It seems that the GPU is a severe bottleneck for Aero.

I installed Vista on my sisters machine whose config is E6300 @ 2.14GHz, 1 GB DDR2 667MHz RAM on a MSI P965Neo and a GeForce 6200 TC. Aero was a bit sluggish on this machine @ 1280 x 1024 resolution. The Vista performance index indicates as much. Graphics index was 2.1 while the rest were near the 5 mark.

Though my own rig handles Aero smoothly, the stress on the GPU was apparent, My 1900XT idles @ 44 deg in Win XP and 49 deg in Vista.

I installed Vista Ultimate edition Version 6(Build 6000).Vista recognized my card and turned on Aero automatically:hap2:

this works on all versions

Enable Aero Glass

Regedit:
HKCU/Software/Microsoft/Windows/DWM/

Composition = 1
CompositionPolicy = 2

Right click Command Prompt and run as admin:

net stop uxsms
net start uxsms

If the hardware requirements are met.. then..

My computer meets the minimum recommendations, but I'm still not getting Windows Aero. Is there anything else I can do?
Yes. Make sure that the color is set to 32 bit, the monitor refresh rate is higher than 10 hertz, the theme is set to Windows Vista, the color scheme is set to Windows Aero, and window frame transparency is on.

To set the color to 32 bit
Click to open Display Settings.

Under Colors, select Highest (32 bit), and then click OK. (If you can't select 32 bit, check that your resolution is as high as possible, and then try again.)

To set the monitor refresh rate
Click to open Display Settings.

Click Advanced Settings.

Click the Monitor tab, and then click a refresh rate that's higher than 10 hertz. The monitor will take a moment to adjust. If you want to keep the changes, click Apply. If you don't apply the changes within fifteen seconds, the refresh rate will revert back to your original setting.

Note
Changes to the refresh rate affect all users who log on to the computer.

To change the desktop theme to Windows Vista
open Theme Settings.

In the Theme list, select Windows Vista , and then click OK.

To change the color scheme to Windows Aero
open Appearance Settings.

In the Color scheme list, select Windows Aero, and then click OK.

To turn on window frame transparency, the color scheme must first be set to Windows Aero.

Click the Start button , click Control Panel, click Appearance and Personalization, click Personalization, and then click Window Color and Appearance.

Select the Enable transparency check box so that it is checked.

Note
If you see the Appearance Settings dialog box instead of the Window Color and Appearance window, the theme might not be set to Windows Vista, the color scheme might not be set to Windows Aero, or the computer might not meet the minimum hardware requirements for running Windows Aero.

That's it..

P.S : But it will still show 'Windows Vista' or 'Modified theme' in the theme window.
