Hello

Stuff I have:

1) PS3 320GB slim

2) Dell Inspiron laptop

Now I need to connect PS3 to media server using my laptop.

Question : Will I be needing any other device, like Wireless router or something?

Assuming I don't , then i assume that some other means of connection will be needed. How do I achieve this?

I have tried to connect my laptop to PS3 wirelessly through Connectify. The PS3 detects the network, but always fails to connect to it. I have tried all the possible settings, but it just doesn't. However my other laptop easily connects.

So is there any other way?

Some other software? Or is it possible via LAN cable?

It would be really helpful if people having a setup can share there setup and guide me too.

Also, If I can connect PS3 through Media server, can i :

1) Play MKV files?

2) Have subtitle support (.srt)

On a side note: I just need all this setup because I need to have subtitle support for many of the movies, since they are world cinema. If it's not possible through PS3, then is there any cheaper option than this:

Yes mkv files upto 1080p with subtitles can be streamed flawlessly on a LAN cable connection or through a Wireless Router with higher speed support. But for this, your laptop has to be powerful enough to transcode videos on the fly.

I ve had mine setup for sometime previously through the lan cable, its the cheapest and fastest method.

And I used the latest version of PS3 Media Server to serve as the server which the PS3 detects.

This link has everything you need to set it up!

Ah ..one more Query...

My laptop can't give 5.1 Audio output. Will PS3 through media server be able to do that?

Why I am asking is , since my laptop doesn't have audio card powerful enough to give audio output in 5.1l how will PS3 do that?

^^ if your ps3 is on a cfw, then you can install showtime, it will almost fulfill your needs..

ignore, if my reply is outta context, as i'm drunk right now..

Yes you will get 5.1 Dts/DD signal but not Dolby TruHd/DTS HD Ma.Your laptops 5.1 ability doesnt matter cuz you can get the sound only via the streaming video signal through the PS3 optics/hdmi cable,

There will be a checkbox under Transcoding settings in Ps3 media server called "keep dts in stream" this will help the dts stream in the video being converted to Dolby digital on the fly..

P.s. I dont drink beer..It tastes yuck!
