How do i format my HDD? I don't know what is the procedure that keeps the cd rom working while it formats the HDD. i mean if i format then how do i install the software when the cd rom installations files shall also get deleted.

can some1 help? my pc has gotten very slow and i'd like to do this tonight so that i can update win xp also and not be charged for it by my isp coz night surfing/downloading is free.

do u want to reinstall XP ? then bootable XP cd setup (while installing windows) will let u to format the drive. u can format the rest of the drives in windows (right click on the drive in explrer, thenc click to format. u can do the format from DOS too ... u have to boot ur comp with any bootable cd or floppy.

u have to type the command format x: (if u have to format the x drive) in the dos prompt tht appears after the boot (A:\)

cd rom is a ATAPI device ... it will be recognized if u choose boot from cd with cd rom support with any bootable floppy or cd (u dont need it to be installed to be recognized).

btw. u may have to chance the boot sequence from bios (with fdd or cd drive on the first of the sequence)

You can download a windows xp setup simulation here which will give you all the steps which you need to perform to setup windows xp.
On the setup screen you will get an option to format your C drive using NTFS/FAT.

1. First of all you will need a bootable windows xp CD (if you are installing windows xp)
2. Change your first boot device to CDROM
3. Insert the windows xp cd and start system
4. Follow the steps according to the simulation.
