Hi,
Need help in figuring out how to get 5.1 audio in ubuntu 10.10 on the gigabyte g31m-es2l motherboard. The processor is E5200.

What to install and how to enable the 5.1 audio.

Thanks in advance. :)

Assuming its GNOME, in the GUI, what if you click the speaker icon in the status/system tray, click preferences, and see the Output tab, what does it show there?

Else you could search online for the motherboard model and "ubuntu linux pulseaudio sound driver" keywords to get an idea of the audio chipset present and driver support in 10.10.

It shows ..

Tried alsamixer and it shows the channels and such.

Stereo audio works.Even in VLC when "5.1 analog output" is selected, I can hear the surround channels in the right, left speakers but no vocals in the center speaker.Am I missing something here ?

I guess I ll have to search somemore.Found few problems on the ubuntu forums but they dont seem to work for me.

In the "Hardware" tab in same dialog above there is a dropdown, for the "Profile" which should have entries for stereo, 5.1, 7.1 etc... do you have something like that to try?

There is also a "Test Speakers" button there...

^ Yes there are entries. I suppose some of them work too

But I fiddled around with alsa and pulseaudio, removed both of them by issuing "sudo apt-get remove alsa/pulseaudio" they got removed.Yet the audio was still working. When I removed them, the sound panel does not show up.So reinstalled both of them and now a weird thing is happening. The test speakers is not working, meaning when i click test right/left speaker no sound comes, but if i play some audio/movie it works fine.

What I ll do now is install a fresh installation and then start from there.

Thanks for helping out vishal :)

^ No it didnt actually worked. The VLC outputed 5.1 but the soundcard (onboard) picks up only the sound for the front speakers. Its like if the sound is set in VLC to output stereo then all is good. When its set to 5.1,the VLC does its job but the soundcard doesnt.

I messed some other settings eventually removing the alsa and dont know how to get them back. :p alsamixer now shows no device found and there is no audio whatsoever from the system. So its the reinstall now.

I have logitech X 540 5.1 speakers. :)

Edit: REinstalled ubuntu..

When run the speaker-test command I can only hear the front left and front right voice.Rest others are muted.

Phew !! Finally got it to work. :)

Here is the thing to do:

Open Terminal and type without quotes "gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf"

Add a comment at the end of the text at the bottom without quotes "options snd-hda-intel model=clevo-m540r"

Save the file and reboot.

Then in Sound Properties > Hardware Tab > Settings for selected device: Profile : ANALOG SURROUND 5.1 OUTPUT

Thats it. Now I have 5.1 audio in VLC too.
