Hi guys,

I need to get something from the US. A business associate of mine is ready to buy and ship them in. How can I escape from paying Import duty. Planning to get electronics like Ipad, DSLR and some biking gear. Remmeber he is a business associate mening he can mark it as a company sample or something.
Do help me out.

Any item upto a value of Rs 10,000 including shipping charges which is sent as a gift to an Indian Resident is free from Import duty

Does one need to declare the value of the product? How does one do it? An Invoice? If so who checks it before it is packaked? If its the courier company, then why not just pack it before with a fake invoice and send it over?

Indian customs were dumb earlier but not any more IIRC they check the local pricing and then put a import duty on the item and mind you ipad is termed as laptop according to them.

In my experience if a legal invoice is attached like paypal , amazon , newegg then they take invoice value even if its ridiculously low compared to market prices . If no invoice then market value . Thats for US

and chinese stuff as per market value and not invoice value due to anti dumping issues

As your friend is a business associate a proper invoice , marked as gift or sample and good luck can easily get you duty free

In these cases if an agent is used in between it always helps like SNS or ICC or any other
