How to get unprocessed audio stream From PC to AVR

Guys I have hooked my Onkyo 807 AVR to PC via Creative X-FI xtreme gamer optical out and I assume I'm getting processed audio stream using that approach cause I'm getting all the features and controls available from my sound card's own controller program as earlier without AVR and I'm very use to with sound generated by this ages old card and I'm not getting any significant improvement by hooking up Onkyo 807 AVR. The sound is very similar what I was getting without this AVR.

So am I feeding the AVR processed signal I'm not sure and if yes then which way I can get unprocessed audio stream out of my PC to AVR to get most out of my equipment please suggest.

I'm using Windows XP SP3.

If you have output mode as digital either via spdif/optical or hdmi then you are def giving unprocessed signals to the Oknyo receiver and since its digital out which sound card you use on the pc wouldnt make difference as the processing will be done via onkyo receiver.

Since you are not getting perceptible difference in sound may be the receiver is not up to mark for music and moreso i always felts onkyos were more for movies than music.

Digital out is the best bet for AVR Setup where AVR gets to process the sound, which i belive you already are doing.

Anyways which speakers are you using right now?

Thanks buddy yes I was not sure about if I'm getting or not unprocessed audio stream if as you mentioned my sound card's optical out giving truly unprocessed audio stream then its a really good news for me so I'm done with my input source n can concentrate on other things to improve my listening experience like tweaking with AVR's settings, changing speaker cables with better ones, calibrating speakers, working with some room acoustics etc..... and one more thing a visit at ENT specialist as well if nothing works.

BTW I'm using Polk audio TSI 500 floor standers TSI 200 surround speakers CS 20 center channel DSW PRO 600 sub woofer.

HDMI soundcard / ATI 5 series videocard straight to the AVR..
Oh never knew tis before! So the HDMI cable from any 5 series card is able to carry both the video and the LPCM audio as well? I suppose this wasn't the case with the ATI HD 4XXX series cards?

Thanks for the input Bhairav! :)

Well guys I Google bit more about my sound card and found that it can only give stereo sound (two channels) at max through its Optical out and I confirmed it as well by using AVR's listening mode selected as direct after doing so only FR/FL are flashing on AVR's speakers indicators and only these two channels are giving sound as well in that mode so I think a was getting virtual 5.1 channel sound generated by my AVR previously with listening mode selected as Dolby digital pro logic II.

Even in windows 7 I could found (2 channels, 24 bit,48000 Hz) under advanced tab in SPDIF out properties. But in supported formats tab in SPDIF out properties I found DTS audio, Dolby digital ticked and in test there all the 5.1 speakers playing test tones. So where I'm and how can I get proper unprocessed 5.1 channel audio stream of MKV files from my PC to AVR?

And can I even use my mother board's (Asus P5KPL-CM) SPDIF connector to achieve my purpose?

Or can I use three 3.5mm Stereo to RCA cables one for FL/FR, one for RL/RR, and one for center/sub but I think although I'll get all 5.1 channels doing so but these will be firstly analog and secondly processed as well by the sound card.
