hi friends need help in extending the space on my c drive, as i keep on getting the message "comp. running in critical conditn. no space on c-drive". So'plzz suggest me some way to get of it:- can i change the disk sizes without formatting computer as there is some space unused on other drives...

go to driver properties----do disk clean up .
its capacity is taken by windows shadow copy if you are using windows vista or 7.
do clean up system files as well.

right click on my computer >manage>disk management

now free some space on other drive and then add those GB's to C drive

OR

you can install external software's on other drive to free space on your primary C drive

i personally use C drive for windows only and all my s/w and games go to other drives .... whene ever i have to reinstall windows then i just format C drive and almost 70~80% work is done [most of the games and s/w can be used without installing them again] so it saves lot of time

You can increase space on C without formatting using disk management software like easeus partition master & other similar software

First do two things-

1) Run - %temp% > Ctrl+A > Shift+Del

2) Run - prefetch > Ctrl+A > Shift+Del

3) Make sure Recycle Bin is empty.

4) Del old Restore points if not necessary. They consume a lot space.

If still you need more space, merge some space from other partitions using 3rd party apps such as Acronis Disk director, Norton Partition manager, etc

Windows Disk management has got no option to "add those GBs".

You can also shift virtual memory space from C: drive, it will also save some space. Also you can remove temporary internet files,as they consume significant amount of space.

Several methods to increase space:

1. Start > Programs > Accesories > System Tools > Disk Clean up.

Let it finish, select all that you feel ought to be removed. Then select the other tab and delete all system restore points. IMO, stop the service as it will take up extra space where none is needed.

Then rerun this in admin mode. This gives option (in my case) to remove thumbnail cache etc. Saves around 250~350MB of space.

2. As john_avi has said, remove the virtual memory file to another partition. You could free from 512 to 2GB of space.

Another thing is to move the downloads folder (if you have one) to another drive (if it has loads of data)

The more advanced methods are not recommended as you might lose you data.

I would not trust the Windows based partition utility to extend/shrink partitions. I did it once on a platter and it corrupted the OS, and I could never reach the Desktop or Boot into Save Mode. Easeus Partition Magic has always worked for me.

I agree some softs tend to bootfail. For me Acronis Disk Director FTW.

you gotta be kidding

first shrink space from the drive which has extra space then extend C drive

What if you have 3 partitions, C,D,E. And want to shrink E and add to C ? Not sure if windows does that. I think it only adds "consequent" empty space which has been freed up by shrinking.

Nope, you cannot add GBs to your boot drive in Disk Management.

Unfortunately I'm in the same predicament as the OP. Has anyone here tried Partition Magic?

yes it does

i have dont it several times as first i had only 500GB HD with 5 partitions then added 1TB and reshuffle partitions again again added 1 TB more and reshuffle partitions ... last time removed 500GB HD and reshuffle partitions again and doing so never faced any problem

free space in disk 1 not in disk 2

I'll try it out and check.

@RD274- IF you can not do through windows as said above, try Acronis Disk director. I use it and it works flawlessly.

Two more easy methods that haven't been mentioned yet.

1) If you never use the Hibernate feature, turn that off. It should give you a few more GB.

2) If you do download and apply windows updates, find the folder where the installer files are downloaded and move them elsewhere. (Once windows downloads and applies the updates, you don't really need the installer files anymore).

If its a desktop, go ahead and disable the hibernate option. But for a laptop, leave it on as it is very useful in case of a power outage and you run low on battery.

Disk cleanup removes the windows updates files.

Partition magic is very outdated these days, try MiniTool Partition Wizard/Manager. Works very well to re-size the system drive. It will restart windows and run before the GUI loads up. Or any of the current partitioning utilities. Note: it's always better to scan all the disks with chkdsk before repartitioning.

What OS btw? Windows xp it's safe to delete the windows\system32\dllcache folder. Note, unless system file protection is turned off, it will show warnings and recreate the folder, albeit without the files in it.

How can you free up space from one disc and then extend space from a partition which is on another disc  ?

when did i say that ?????? anyways i missed unallocated space on your disk 0

in your case you have reached the limit of primary partition [i think its 4 or 5.... 90% its 4]thats the reason you cant extend your C drive

deleted a primary partition and extend the C drive also convert your dist to dynamic that will allow you to create any no. of dynamic partitions

Converted to Dynamic partitions on my disk 0 and still not able to extend my boot drive (C:\).

This exercise seems bound to end in failure or worse, data loss. Why not simply use one of the free partitioning software instead of mucking about with windows disk management?
