Guys,

I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Android OS as I've been on the iOS forever now.
My wife owns a Galaxy S3, bought 8-9 months back. The phone's interface has become extremely slow and buggy over the past few months and the battery life seems to be worse than when it was new.
Now I'm wondering if installing a stock Android firmware will change things. She doesn''t have much use for Samsung's bells and whistles on top of the Android OS.
Can someone guide me on installing the stock Android OS on her phone (Galaxy S3- GT-I9300)

Thanks

Op was enquiring about Stock and you are giving links for custom roms.

U need only 3 things
1.Install Samsung Kies so that usb drivers are installed.
2.Download Odin 3.04 will give u link.
3.Download latest stock firmware from www.samfirmware.com by selling Gt -9300 and India INU and download rom

Will post u link wait

Oops.Missed the stock ROM part after seeing the phone was 8-9 months odd which is exactly the time point when I had the itch to go for custom ROMs.:P

BTW if you are only going for stock ROM you can first do a factory reset before going through the ODIN route.
You wife might be having some apps on her phone which lead to the battery drain with mobile data on.
If you were rooted you could have used Greenify to increase battery life drastically even with mobile data on but if you are not gonna do that best try with a hard factory reset first and then move to custom ROM route.

thanks guys..
Will moving to stock/custom (non-Samsung) firmware actually improve the phone's performance?

Of all the ROMs I tried SuperNexus ROM JB 4.2.2 had the best battery life as this is a vanilla build on the Google Nexus Android ROM.

OP -
1) I think you should first perform a factory (data reset). That should clean up a lot of mess.
2) However before you do that, take backup of all your data
3) You can also take backup of SMS using this app

There are few custom roms that give good battery performance. However, the procedure(to install custom rom) carries its own risks; in worst case can lead to a dead(brick) device. You should avoid that unless you are familiar to such process.

factory reset makes more sense as a first step.
So I should
1. backup the S3 on a PC using Samsung Kies;
2. Choose the Factory reset option from Settings and
3. then restore my contacts and essential apps from Kies backup.

Is this sequence correct?

First identify what you need to backup -
1) Pics - will be in DCIM folder
2) Videos - same as above
3) Music, any documents - custom folder
4) Messages - you may use app I shared . Once you create backup - it will be in (default) folder SMSbackupandRestore
5) App specific data - you may plan to purchase Titanium Backup (it's worth the price). Will create backup in Titanum backup (I suppose)
6) For Whatsapp - whatsapp folder

a) Connect your S3 to pc
b) Use Windows explorer to browse phone data and backup to PC
c) After reset, you can again connect to pc and restore data back to respective folders.

First do you mean stock android experience, or stock ROM (as latter would be a Samsung ROM with all bells and whistles). In any case, please take some time out and read extensively on XDA before attempting to root/install custom ROM. S3 also has the eMMC bug, where a wrong wipe can make an instant paperweight of your phone.
