i also have a small question...the notebook HDDs' need only a USB port for both power & connection....but the normmal desktop HDDs' needs a externel power source .. yes..? any alternative for this..? like connecting another usb...

also...how long have u continiously used it?

3.5" IDEs need more power than the 500mA max avail\ble on the usb port, so unfortunately, you need to use an external power supply...

i've been using external HDDs for a while now and they are fairly dependable however, plz do yourself a favor and get a decent quality casing .....the el-cheapo casings (500-700 with PS) are no good and can even damage ur disk

OT: Visu, something from your query tells me you are from Chennai/TN...are you ? ;)

Thanks for the help. But you see i will be using that hdd as a Regular hdd. i am going to do all my downloads in that hdd. so will it be harmfull , if i use it like a regular hdd ? And you guys mentioned external power supply , will i get it with the case or do i have to buy it seprately ? Also what will you suggest ? should i get a normal hdd and make i external or should i get a pre made external hdd ?

If you make a HDD external with an "Enclosure", then it will be USB interface. Depending on your computer, you can boot from the USB HDD and use it as a regular internal HDD.

And yes, most enclosures come with a powersupply. There will be a power button and a power LED light on the enclosure.

Making an internal HDD to external used to be cheaper but I've noticed price cuts for external HDD also so it's your choice. Both should work in the same way.

Lastly, if you planning to buy enclosure for an internal HDD, make sure you buy the right enclosure. Enclosures are different for Serial ATA and IDE hard-drives.

I believe we carried a writeup on that some months back.. ;) all you need is an external case to get you up and running..
