My computer is attached to a Powercom IND600A UPS which does not charge properly. When the lights go out the UPS shuts of within 5 seconds. This has been happening for a week now. So my computer is at risk.
I think some capacitors are blown off thats why the battery won't charge. I think i can fix it cause i know a little about electronic devices. But i can't get the UPS to open up. I took off the 4 screws of the back panel, then the back panel comes off. But i can't take off the sides or the front panel.
So, if anyone has tried opening a Powercom IND600A or a similar UPS please let me know how should i get it apart.

I know i can call the Powercom service guy. But the ups is out of warranty. And the last 2 times he came over he charged alot.
Thanks.

First of all
WELCOME to TE

your UPS
How old is it?
more than 3 yrs old, probably needs new battery
What's your config? which of these components are attached to battery outlet of UPS?

Where do you live?

I do have 1KVa PCM Ups and I opened it easily.

Hi Ashish,

I live in Pune.

My Powercom IND600A UPS is 4 years old. It stopped working once during the 2 years warranty period and the service guy changed the battery.
It then failed twice during the last 2 years. The service guy charged alot of money on both occasions. The first time he said he 'changed the PCB fuse & mosfet' and the second time he said he 'repaired the PCB'. I knew he was ripping me off.Anyways, during the last 6 months i have solved all my computer related problems on my own, both software and hardware, by learning from the net. I have fixed some of my electronic appliances also like my LCD tv which had a minor problem. I have a soldering iron and some other stuff that i needed. So i don't like calling the service guys anymore.

My PC Config is,
P4 3.0GHz
80GB HDD, 512MB RAM
17" LG CRT Monitor
Sony CD/DVD Drive
JBL Speakers
BSNL - Huawei Modem

The picture below shows the front and back panels of the IND600A UPS

The link for the UPS manual is below

The UPS has 4 outlets on the back panel - 3 battery backup outlets and 1 surge protection outlet.
To the 3 battery backup outlets i have connected the CPU,Monitor and Modem.
To the 1 surge protection outlet i have connected the speakers power cable (as i don't mind if the power gets cut for the speakers incase of power failure)

When my UPS was functioning properly it would give me a backup time of 10 mins; then during the last 2 weeks it gave a back up time of 2 mins; and today it gives a time of only 5 seconds.
After reading different forums about repairing the UPS i think the a capacitor of the charger of the battery has blown. So if a capacitor appears bulged or leaking i will have to replace it with a new one.
The UPS has 4 screws on the back panel which has the outlet sockets. I removed the 4 screws and the back panel came off. After that i can't figure out how to get the rest of it apart. I can see a part of the circuit board, the transformer and battery inside.

Let me know what u think.
Thanks.

Clearly, the battery has ended its life span.
take it to a local electrical/electronic repair shop and get it opened, if you can't by urself. Not a big shop, somebody who repairs Mixers and TVs.

It must be having a single 7AMP 12 V battery. If ur bike has similar battery( eg Karizma and other HH self-start bikes, confirm the specs b4 using) (fully charged) try it w/o fitting it inside ( caution !!). This will ensure that the battery is dead.

new battery costs 700/- Exide.

But I'd suggest, buy a new UPS as this one has already given you a lot of problems.

My friend has same UPS, dead one. I've asked him to give it to me. I'll post the pics when I get it, most probably tomorrow.

I'll take it to a local repair guy and i'll see if he can open it.

Incase i don't get it fixed within a few days, I'll buy a new UPS but an APC this time.

Ashish, i've decided to buy a new UPS; will be getting it tomorrow. So don't bother opening up the dead ups u got. thanks again.
