How to ping ISP server via router

Hi all,

About my internet setup, I receive internet from my ISP via the LAN cable. The IP is static, provided by the ISP. To use the internet, I have to login to their server using a username and password.

Earlier, I did not have a router. So, to see if the ISP server was up, I could just ping the IP of the ISP server from my computer using the command prompt, and it would show whether it was up.

However, since I got a router, I find that I cannot ping the ISP server from the computer directly as before. To ping the ISP server, I have to open the router administration page using the browser, then use its diagnostics feature to ping the ISP server. It shows only a few pings, and is not like the continuous ping that can be seen when you run ping from the command prompt. So, it's difficult to see the pings, and also diagnose. Also, sometimes the router pages do not open and get stuck, even after being refreshed.

Is there any way, or any setting, by which I can ping the ISP server from the command prompt on the computer? Do I have to make changes in firewall settings of computer, or any settings in the router?

Why can't I ping the ISP server directly from the computer?

I am using Windows 8. The firewall of Windows 8 is on, and the hardware firewall on the router is off.

If any more information is required, do let me know.

Use tracert command ..

Open up command Prompt, type "tracert google.com"

The third(or 2nd) hop should be to your ISP gateway.

@blr_p , the PC works fine behind the wifi router. I can access the internet without problems, and so can my Android phone, which connects via the wifi. I have put in the settings provided by the ISP into the router, for a static IP address, and it all works fine. It's just that I cannot ping to the ISP server from my computer using the command prompt, like I did before without the router.

@dexBG , well, I do know the ISP gateway, it's the ISP server itself, and I know it's IP too. So, that is not a problem.

@booo , by ssh access, you mean the HTTPS? Yes, it does provide that... under Local Management Access, and currently, it's set to HTTP, but I don't see how that is related to the issue. I just simply need to be able to ping to the ISP server directly from the computer by running the ping command via command prompt.

On another issue, why do the router administration pages do not open fully sometimes? I mean, the page would open, but not fully, like it's waiting for something. And I have noticed that until the page is fully opened, the ping won't run from the router page. It's a bit strange.

I am using a Cisco router E1200 by the way.

Hi all,

I don't know what happened, but I just checked, and I am able to ping to the ISP server with the ping command from the command prompt  ... I really don't know how that happened.

I haven't changed any settings whatsoever, either in the firewall, or in the router. And I swear that before now, I was not able to ping to the ISP server before, from the command prompt. I had tried it many times, so this is not something I would have missed.

Only thing I remember doing is that today, I had turned the Windows firewall off for a few time. At that time, the internet line from the ISP had some problem, and I was trying to see if I could run the ping from the computer. I was checking the firewall settings, but I didn't see anything that could be blocking the ping from the computer. So, I turned the firewall off completely. I didn't change any other setting. I switched the firewall on after some time. Don't know, but I guess that must have triggered something... I have no clue!

But now, weirdly, and strangely, I am able to ping the ISP server directly from the command prompt, or from the run box. Earlier, whenever I tried, it would either show "Request timed out", or, "host not reachable".. even though I could ping it via the router administration, and was able to access the internet too.

So, I guess the problem is solved. How, I don't have a clue.

Thanks for the replies and all the help, really appreciated :) ...

Strange things happen in the world of computers sometimes
